Hi guys,

I'm travelling from Derby to Newcastle (and return) tomorrow morning, and was wondering if any savings can be made on the direct Off-Peak Return price with 16-25 railcard?

I see that there are some cheaper advances still available, however I need the flexibility of the off-peak return. Could any savings be made on this, perhaps going non-direct, or split-ticketing? I'm doubtful but thought I'd ask anyway!

Also, are there any trains from Newcastle to Derby later than the 19:44, again perhaps going non-direct? NRE doesn't show any (unless I arrive the next morning, which isn't an option!) but there are people on here that may know, so I thought I'd ask.

Regards,

Jack

Have you looked at the cost of Off Peak Day returns from Derby to Sheffield, Sheffield to York, and York to Newcastle?

If you want a really cheap price and do not mind a very slow journey going "non-direct", then something like this is the cheapest that I can think of:-

Derby to Bolton-on-Dearn £6.75
Bolton-on-Dearn to Church Fenton £6.85
Church Fenton to Hartlepool £8.10 (rte: Not Darlington)
Hartlepool to Newcastle £5.55

However the journey would be very slow; you'd need to change trains at Thornaby, York and Leeds!

Therefore, for a bit more money, you may be best off simply splitting at Sheffield & York.

You can find prices on any of the ticket booking sites, and if you use a WebTIS site, you can click the (i) button on the itinerary of your choice, to see where the train calls. You can try "splitting" at points where the train calls.

Bear in mind the train needs to call at the station where you change from one ticket to the next, in both directions. That is why York & Sheffield may be best, as all trains will call, and go via, those points.

19:44 is indeed the last southbound XC from Newcastle - so you'd have to change at either York or Leeds, and then probably Sheffield.

You have to be lucky to be able to travel by train from Newcastle to Derby after 1944 on a Saturday evening.

The next southbound train is the 2042 Newcastle - Doncaster 2216, shown by Open Train Times to have a working arrival time on platform 8 of 2211.

If that train arrives promptly at 2211, you may just reach platform 3b for the 2213 Doncaster - Sheffield 2254. This connects with the 2320 Sheffield - Derby 0013.

Unfortunately platform 3b is on a different platform island from platform 8 at Doncaster and you would need to use the subway - see the station plan.

If the Doncaster connection fails, there is a later 2319 Doncaster - Sheffield 2359, but the next service from there to Derby on Sunday morning is a 0705 Sheffield - Derby 0831 rail replacement bus.

Annoyingly, on most routes the end of service is earlier than normal on Saturdays, and the start of service is later than normal on Sundays. Of course, the reason for this is for engineering works, so I can cope!

To be honest, the last long distance service being just before 8pm on a Saturday isn't that bad. The last service from Glasgow to Lancaster on a Saturday is at 6:30pm! Another example - Birmingham to Liverpool - has the last service at 8:01pm, so most long distance services seem to finish at around that time.

Cheers for all the help guys - still going direct but I've managed to whittle it down to around £35 by splitting at Sheffield and York.

Interestingly, I could have got first class advances for £10 than the initial off-peak return price - and a massive saving on the first class advance price being quoted by NRE! Irritating that I need the flexibility on this occasion. :(

Although the extra hour in Newcastle would be useful, I'm not sure I can risk chancing it! Plus I don't think splitting at York allows me to change at Doncaster? I'm travelling light but 2 minutes is still going to be tight, particularly when dispatch etc is taken into consideration. And, of course, if the train is late... (though, that said, I did manage to make a Blackpool North connection off a London train at Preston once in about the same amount of time, though it was helped by being a busy onward train!)

Thanks again anyway all, much appreciated.

It absolutely does.

A York - Sheffield ticket is certainly valid via Doncaster, this is the fastest* route (journey time approx 45 - 50 mins, as opposed to 1 hour 5 minimum via Leeds) and it is also what I believe to be the shortest* route by regular scheduled services, and it is also a mapped route in the Routeing Guide too. It is the route nearly half the through trains take, and is the route most people travelling between York and Sheffield would take.

(* Before anyone mentions Pontefract, yes this route is shorter, and yes some non-stop trains do occasionally run which are fairly fast, but overall I do not think 3 pacers per day (on a good day) counts as a regular scheduled passenger service, and even if a HST or Voyager was diverted via Pontefract, on clear signals I am sure that via Doncaster would actually be marginally faster)

Thanks for clarifying that for me, makes sense! Well, as I say, it's unlikely that I will risk it (Frankly the taxi fare or the wait for the bus just isn't worth it!) but we shall see what happens.

Thanks again to everyone for your help.
