Just got the 13.01 Totton to Romsey train from Totton to Southampton and I see South West Train are now using Class 158's trains and not class 170's.

Do any of you know why they are using class 158's trains and not class 170's trains.

Because there are 2 less 170's but only 1 159/1, meaning they needed tp use something else on 1 diagram or another, anyway I would not moan, 158's are much nicer

I should imagine that once all the 170s have gone and all the 159/1s are on streem, the two 158s will be permanently used on Totton - Romsey services etc and the 159s will be used on the Bristol - Waterloo services.

Not all the 170s are going matey.

170 301 - 305 going to FTPEX.
170 306 - 308 staying with SWT.
170 392 going to Southern.

How many units are needed for the Romsey-Totton services? From my rough working I work it out to be 2or3 so those 3 170's will be enough. Am I wrong?

Ahh, so Transpennine will be getting five? Are these for use on the Hull route? If so, I am looking forward to seeing them. Heard some negative comments but its nice to see some more modern trains on the TPE route. Any idea when they'll go into service?

2 Units work the daily main Totton - Romseys, with a 159 doing the first trip that forms the service to Yeovil JCN

Apparently SWT are getting rid of the two 158s soon aswell.

Isn't the service meant to be extended from Romsey to Salisbury at some point in the future? This would then require more than 2 trains, perhaps the remaining three 170s would work it whilst still down South, with a 2 car 158 used incase of failures?

The major problem is that if one unit goes AWOL, then the service goes up the spout. One went "out" at Southampton Central en route to Eastleigh and that meant no return service of course. Romsey pax can get to Central, but the reliance on the shuttles for St Denys [also served by Pompey trains], Swaythling, and Chandlers Ford means that there is no service for them. Sometimes units are turned at Eastleigh as well so C/Ford misses out.
