Hi All,

Just wondered if anyone could shed any light on the Waterloo & City Line.

Because trains reverse via the depot at Waterloo are customers able to board on the terminate platform and go for a ride into the depot.

If this is so, I would love to do it.

Please let me know - Josh

Not officially. You could theoretically stay on; however you officially aren't allowed to, and if the train goes into the depot and that was its last working you're a bit snookered.

I'm not sure of the procedure at Waterloo, with the W&C having quick turnarounds, but LU trains are normally checked by the driver and platform staff before proceeding to depots or reversing sidings. The staff check each carriage and shut the doors to each individually.

A passenger being over-carried into sidings or depots would likely be taken very seriously.

I was down on the Waterloo & City platform at Waterloo a few weeks ago one Saturday: the train arrived into Waterloo, the doors opened, closed, and off it went into the depot; no checks were made.

I agree though, it would be quite serious if someone was caught doing it.

Perhaps checks aren't made (or so rigidly enforced) if the train is going to turn around straight away - but if it's going out of service for any length of time (i.e. left unattended) then I'd expect them to be checking. That must be happening, or else we'd have had Metro running a story about a passenger fearing for his life after being locked in.

I suppose you could hide, by lying down, as I presume not every driver will step into each carriage and look before locking it!

Thanks All.

Does anyone know policies for the loops - Heathrow, Kennington, can you ride round on them?

Heathrow is a fully passenger loop, so you'll be fine on that. Kennington you might be able to do, it's much the same as we've just discussed, except for there's no threat of being stranded in a depot there! I wouldn't recommend it though.

Heathrow loop is scheduled pax services. Goes from; Hatton X > Terminal 4 (sits for up to 8 mins) > Terminals 1 & 3 > London Bound.

What about the headshunt at Bank fro the DLR? Is that possible?

No, for two reasons. Firstly, there are sometimes staff on the platform. Secondly, the on train staff check each car. I did see someone, by accident, trying to board, and they were politely taken off, and shown to the correct departure platform.

Incidentally, in all the cases, especially the W&C, there will be CCTV on the platforms, and possibly on the trains, so anyone attempting to board on the arrivals platform will be seen, as would anyone hiding.

Heathrow is a passenger service tunnel, Kennington is colour-light signalled so train's don't need to be checked, just be aware that there's always the possibility you'll be sitting in there for a few hours if the service goes to pot.

Waterloo is a no-no - there tends to be station staff assisting the driver in detrainments. I won't go into details obviously but the nature of the shunt move if you got in there you could get away with not being noticed.

However if it was noticed that you'd been "over-carried" it is an operating incident and isn't simply a case of 'whoops let's get you out again'.

Isn't the W&C double manned, with two drivers in the peak to have a quick turnaround, or am I getting confused with another line??

Quite a few lines do IIRC, the Working Timetables for all the lines were published under FOI a while ago and show them... I can't remember which ones did but the W&C was one of them :)

Edit: The kennington loop is fun to stay on, as you get 'normals' with you who then get very confused when they end up at Kennington :D

Judging from this all that is required at Bank Station is a reversal, and onto the crossover.
IRRC, the driver at the front gets out and starts walking to the Waterloo end of the train, waits for the next train to arrive at that platform, then drives it back to Waterloo etc, etc,

It's not double manned, it's called stepping back. The same happens at Aldgate on the Metropolitan Line, and Brixton on the Victoria Line.

L.U.L. are understandably nervous about public access to any area not normally so. There are, of course, many websites covering the Underground system. Some photos were taken in easier times, others have been taken more recently by stealth.

Not too nervous that the requirement that all trains must be checked has been removed from the rule book for number of situations...

I have done both the Kennington Loop and the DLR reversing siding at Bank.

For the Kennington Loop, I was in the front carriage and no checks were made - I just stayed onboard, however the driver quickly went to a tea room to refill his cup before returning to the cab and noticed me still onboard and said the train had terminated. I mentioned that I was an enthusiast and politely asked if there was any chance of doing the loop and he obliged. The driver even made a special announcement just for me saying "for any passengers still onboard, we will be held in the loop for 8 minutes, this is now a Northern Line train to High Barnet". :p

For the DLR reversing siding at Bank, I did it just after 3 car trains were just introduced and again just stayed onboard. I was in the front set and the PSA/Conductor in the rear (3rd) set and quite naturally he never saw me still onboard and just closed the doors and departed. The train entered the siding, stopped, and then reversed out without waiting. I actually got quite a weird look from the passengers when we came in to the departure platform - they were probably wondering where I had came from.

Isn't there a special button for the W&C drivers to press once they're clear to let the guy at the other end know he can go?

Yes, they're at Brixton and Aldgate too. 'Rear Cab Clear' (RCC) plungers illuminate a sign and sound a siren at the opposite end.
