Another bit of a query I'd like to put up to the forums expertise if I may.

I've got to go up to Thatcham from Fareham on business in a couple of weeks (on a Thursday). Work will provide me with an Anytime Day Return.

That evening I've got a do on up in London so I'd want to go straight from Thatcham.

I have a Network Card. I don't have Oyster.

The most straightforward way (ticket-wise) would seem to be go back to Basingstoke and buy a SuperOffPeak Travel Card from Basingstoke. From Waterloo I'd need to make two bus journeys to get to the venue, and presume this would be the cheapest way of doing it bearing in mind the £13 minimum fare on the Network Card??

However, from a purely travel point of view it would make sense for me to go from Reading to Paddington, catch the tube to the venue, and then return by bus to Waterloo and home to Fareham afterwards. Off the top of my head I can't think of a particularly "clever" way of doing this. Probably a single Reading to Zone 1, a bus fare and then a single Waterloo-Basingstoke. Not sure how much this would cost, but I suspect quite a bit.

Can any of the gurus come up with the cheapest way of making this journey and the cost relative to going back to Basingstoke as in my first option.

Thanks as ever in advance, any savings will be gratefully received bearing in mind the cost of drinks up in town!!! :D

A travelcard from Reading £14.35 and then a Boundary Zone 6 to Basingstoke £9.55 not via Reading SDS which will include the bus and tube trips as well, but train back to Fareham needs to stop at Basingstoke which the Portsmouth (via Basingstoke) ones obviously do.

I expect someone will be able to knock a few pennys off this though.

How about an Off Peak (as priced by FGW) travel card from Basingstoke route any at £17.50, start short on the outward Reading to Paddington and covers you for return via Waterloo (as long as you stop at Basingstoke).

What a good idea.

I am now going stand in the corner and and practise a period of self-flagellation as punishment for missing this very obvious ticket.

Many thanks for the replies.

Didn't realise such a ticket existed, sounds like the best idea.

Am I likely to have a problem buying it from the ticket office at Reading???

No, you can buy any ticket from any station, buy it in Carlise,Turo or even Fareham on the out if you like. :)

Just make sure it's route; any permitted and not route: via Woking, otherwise you won't be able to go from Reading to London direct into Paddington or Waterloo.

In theory should be able to buy from any station, but in practice to avoid possibility of confused or unhelpful staff I'd pre-order on internet and collect from any of the stations on route. Thought I'd get that comment in now as Wintonian may well be otherwise occupied judging from last post!

Assuming that you can travel outside the restricted hours, it is slightly cheaper to request

Bramley (Hants) - London Zones 1-6
Route Via Reading
Off-Peak Day Travelcard
£16.05 Restriction P7

and a Change of Route Excess in the return portion to

Bramley (Hants) - London Zones 1-6
Route Via Basingstoke
Super Off-Peak Day Travelcard
£16.75 Restriction BE.

The excess fare to pay is half the difference, ie. 35p, making the total £16.40.

You can request this excess at the time of booking your ticket or any time before or during your journey. You cannot be Penalty-Fared for being on a route-restricted ticket and the excess, if purchased onboard, should still be discounted for your railcard regardless of opportunities to pay before boarding.

Many thanks that shaves a few more pennies off - quick question as a travelcard is one ticket presumably the excess is a seperate ticket to sit alongside it??
