It is a a rover ticket that allows unlimited travel on all TOC's for 7 or 14 consecutive days, in either First or Standard class. It's also very expensive!

There is a year all line rover or a season ticket for all lines. But it isn't actually available to general public and it's only issued by ATOC after a specific request and for a specific purpose.

If i got one thats exactly what id be doing Lol

Well yes it's definitely good value for people like us. ;) Particularly if you focus on the expensive "core" routes (with the added benefit of lots of free food if you travel First Class!).

Maybe, but not compared to countries such as Germany. I don't think ATOC expect the majority of users to be travelling 14 hours a day, for 7 consecutive days.

Depends what they expect it to be used for. Some businesspeople will get good value out of it if they are always on the move. Rail enthusiasts will get good value out of it.

In other countries, it seems to be more marketed as something rewarding regular travel in general. Here we seem fixated on season tickets for set routes.

Free food for 7 days straight? It's worth it if you plan on travelling via London and/or using the WAG Express regularly, otherwise it probably isn't.

I agree with All Line Rover.

A FC ALR is good value if you live on/near the WCML, ECML or WAG and will be able to get brekky on your first train of the day and dinner/drinks on your last one home. Other than that, if you're going to be doing suburban lines or rural lines then these trains may not even have First Class!

Also, depending on what gives you utility, you may have more fun going down Cornish branches than making journeys off the ECML in the small hope you get a bit of food and a cold drink.

But fantastic value for money. ;)

For sheer mileage , it is good but for multi-stops as in , perhaps , a spotting trip , it could work out expensive.

EG ,I've planned a 7 day UK journey Yeovil-Yeovil with 37 stops in total , overnighting @ Southend/York/Warrington (dad)/Stirling/(Warrington & Cardiff and the total cost of individual tickets comes to £261.75 (with railcard).

I think that ALR (adult with railcard) comes to £297.00 (£450 -34%).

I did a First Class All Line Rover not so long ago. I didn't plan it at all, it was capricious by nature. Often woke up from my base in London at 4-5am, returning by 11pm. I spent most of the time on intercity trains, did two sleepers and did a couple of branchlines in the Valleys as well as Saltburn/Bishop Auckland and Whitby. Didn't see much point in sightseeing as everywhere was covered in snow :(.

I didn't buy food or drink all week except for on EMT where it was £4.95 for a burger and chips, but then it was actually pretty decent. I got breakfast almost every day on the morning trains from London and two breakfasts on some days, such as when I took Virgin from Euston to Crewe for the WAG Express down to Cardiff. Must've gone to around 15 First Class Lounges. Favorite was Paddington. Cardiff Central was "interesting!"

Pity the trains kept being ridiculously late though!

As you state, the most value is gained when a large amount of time is spent on train. It's definitely not so good when you wish to spend a couple of days in the big cities you may pass. But then, for such a trip, a (Super) Off-Peak Return Brighton - Inverness would provide many, many opportunities, as would, say London to Swansea or London to Plymouth (in their respective directions). With the added advantage that all days do not have to be concurrent to achieve good value.

I've often thought that if ATOC were actually trying to encourage people to travel by train they'd offer a version of the ALR that was something like a 3 in 7 and 8 in 15 would be very popular is it would cater for those that wish to do some bashing but also want to actually visit the places they're travelling to (or just let people have a break at home between bashing sessions!).

I was just about to suggest this, a 1- day all line ranger could be fun too, especially if you could get a sleeper in there somehow.. It muight have tio be a 1.5 day :)

How would you suggest pricing it?

Basically, it's a ticket that doesn't give you unlimited travel across the UK but has a name which suggests it does.
