Currently out of the house - can someone check the permitted routes for the above ticket and whether this is valid via York and Leeds.

Heysham Port is associated with the Lancaster Group stations.

It is obviously valid via Carlisle/Lancaster, which is both the shortest and a mapped route. Mapped route additionally allows travel via the Cumbria Coast if you're that way inclined.

The other mapped route is TP+MH+NC. I've queried this before for a Durham-Barrow-in-Furness journey. If the routeing guide is followed rigorously, it implies that YES it is valid via York and Leeds, but only if you travel in sequence on these maps.

This permits some odd routes but doesn't permit direct travel on the obvious routes between Leeds and Preston or Manchester and Preston (you must either travel Manchester-Bolton-Blackburn-Preston-Lancaster, or Leeds- Halifax - Blackburn - Hellifield - Wennington - Lancaster). You're in a situation where, if you want to travel on the York/Leeds-Preston train, your ticket is valid at all points along that route, but not for direct travel along that route. I suspect that this is an oversight and have used north-west to north-east tickets on Preston-York/Leeds services before with no problem.

EDIT
I should clarify that the maps mean that this ticket is also not valid for travel via Leeds-Skipton-Hellifield-Carnforth. Again, though, I wouldn't be surprised if your ticket was accepted on these services.

I suspect you can travel that way - the only train to Heysham port is the 10:19 from Leeds via Skipton & Lancaster (arrives 12:57)

NR site is showing up higher fares for travel on that train changing at Leeds - it is cheaper via Carlisle with a 90 minute wait at Lancaster.

You can travel on that train from Carnforth or Lancaster (indeed at some point you have to travel on that train!) or from Hellifield if you'd travelled via Blackburn previously, but what you aren't allow to do is go from Newcastle to Leeds to Heysham Port.

The higher fare that you quote is an Advance ticket with Cross Country from Newcastle to Leeds, and a single from Leeds to Heysham Port. You can of course travel using that combination of tickets, but not on a Newcastle to Heysham Port ticket.

Here, the 'shortest' route is valid but the 'quickest' route isn't. Of course, as ATOC tell us, passengers want to travel via the shortest route

What suitable overdistance excess would provide the OP with the journey opportunity he needs?

I presume that it depends which way he wants to go. The response to the original question is that YES it is valid via York and Leeds, but not - according to the technical reading of the routeing guide - on any of the three obvious routes for travel on from there (via Manchester-Preston-Lancaster, via Halixfax-Blackburn-Preston-Lancaster, via Skipton-Hellifield-Wennington-Lancaster).

EC sells Newcastle - Wennington via York and Leeds (SOR - £47.40). SDS for Wennington - Carnforth is £7.60, SOR is £9.20. A zero excess would presumably not be applicable because the only Newcastle - Heysham Port route valid via Wennington is the one via Blackburn whereas the Newcastle - Wennington is only valid via York and Leeds or Carlisle -- S&C/WCML. Wennington's routeing points are Hellifield Group and Lancaster Group. Newcastle - Hellifield Group offers a route via York and Leeds but Hellifleld however only passes the fares check if you take the via Carlisle fare - does this mean that Newcastle - Wennington should only be valid via Carlisle?

The ticket in fact may be a Newcastle - Douglas IOM. This isn't for me, but the said person wanted to go to Leeds first for a few hours in the morning.

Middlesbrough & Darlington routeing points to Lancaster are both valid via Leeds, so a ticket to Douglas would be valid via Leeds from Chester-le-Street or Darlington ar from Heworth via Middlesbrough group

Indeed I was thinking that the logical route would have been (if going via Leeds) Newcastle - Leeds then the Northern stopper from Leeds through to Heysham.

I think the way to play this could be to email Northern and say that you want to travel from Newcastle to Leeds on XC then on northern from Leeds to Heysham direct - and is a newcastle to heysham ticket at £ the correct one to buy?

Hopefully they will give the simple reply you need.

As others have said, I am quite sure that it will be accepted without question.
