I`m thinking of buying a weekly season ticket between Sheffield and Manchester (so I can use a NW Rover) for £81.80. It says the ticket is "valid by any route option shown in the journey planner where the journey can be made by one ticket".
What does that actually mean ? Is it valid via Leeds ? That might be handy if I want to travel via Carnforth or the S&C in conjunction with my NW Rover.

This means any option which is a valid route as detailed by the routeing guide. In your case, this means the Hope Valley Line. I'm afraid that your ticket does not let you use any other route.

Instead of Sheffield - Manchester, Sheffield - Stalybridge (Route Any Permitted) is slightly cheaper and certain valid via Manchester.

Does Sheffield to Stalybridge include the Hope Valley line and the route via Leeds/Huddersfield ? If it did that'd be really handy because I could then pick up the NW Rover area at Leeds and thus get access to the S&C and/or the route to Carnforth. Effectively it'd extend the NW Rover area down to Sheffield from Manchester and Leeds ! Furthermore you could get any train (i.e. before 8.45) thus effectively meaning the combined area has no effective time restraint because there's no way I'd get to Leeds or Manchester before 8.45 anyway !
Incidentally, is there an official way to find out which route is permitted, or do you just put the journey into the Journey Planner and see which routes it brings up ?

Yes this cropped up yesterday, see Determining permitted routes.

Pretty much, yes. If the National Rail website shows the route you want to take is available on one ticket, then that means the National Rail routeing engine believes it is a permitted route. If it shows 2 ticket as being required, then that shows it believes it isn't. It's not always accurate, but it usually is.

It seems not, the only permitted routes I can see in the RG appear to go via the Hope Valley. Which doesn't make a lot of sense, as there is Route: Via Stockport and Route: Any Permitted, with Any Permitted being more expensive and would suggest via Huddersfield.

However if you buy the ticket from Meadowhall to Stalybridge then it is valid via Barnsley, Penistone & Huddersfield as that is the shortest route.

I was under the impression some of the rules are different for return tickets and season tickets (e.g. that a service used with an "add on" ticket doesn`t have to stop at the boundary station) but are the permitted routes the same for a return ticket and a season ticket ? And is there anyway to get the National Rail website to give the prices and all the permitted routes for an "any permitted route" ticket ?

The unofficial web site brfares.com currently shows up-to-date prices and for any combination of origin and destination it tells you all the routes (if any) which can be printed on the ticket and all the current fares for each route. But if you want to know what routes are allowed with, for example, a SHEFFIELD - STALYBRIDGE route ANY PERMITTED ticket and to contrast its validity with that of a SHEFFIELD - STALYBRIDGE route VIA STOCKPORT ticket, then I'm afraid you need to calculate that using the rules in the National Routeing Guide, as yorkie has done before writing post #5.

That link may not answer my question, but it`s bleedin` useful anyway, I`ve put it in my favourites !
