Hi

What level of commitment is entailed with station adoption? Does there need to be a group of people?

Depends on which TOC. For some small stations one person can do it, and normally you have to visit it at least once per week.

It always seems like something i want to do. But i dont think there is a suitable station nearby and with other commitments i think i would struggle.
Is anyone on here part of it? and if so whats it like?

I think I'd like to do it but not yet. As for which station to adopt, currently it would be Pemberton but I may move for work in the near future.

The station in question, for me, is Morley, Leeds. Northern Rail. I dont use trains that much, and its a mile or so from where I live. But I dont have a garden, and flowers seem to be in my nature. Not sure if I should encourage others to join me, or save my time for other things.

Your choice, its something id love to do if i had the time, it can make such a difference.

Get in contact with the TOC who operates the system (note not all TOCs will have a station adoption scheme).

For Northern, you have to visit the station once a week. Once a month you send a report to them. Some adopters will put in things such as planters and other stuff, although you have to do this with permission. You also need to live close to the station in question, and have to be able to commit the time.

It might be the case that Morley already as a station adopter, and I'm not sure if they allow more than one to go on the actual scheme.

Hartlepool has somewhere between 5 and 10 I think so along with Seaton Carew having a similar amount

From what I can see only Arriva Trains Wales, Northern, ScotRail, Southern and South West Trains do it anymore, AFAIK FGW used to.

Aye, but even when adoption schemes do start it tends to be available for unstaffed, local stations only. There are some exceptions though (like Altrincham), but there's certainly more work in doing it for smaller halts.

Northern have just got back to me, and they do already have someone looking after Morley station.
Although by the poor state of it, I am surprised. They have a waiting list, you can adopt a station within 10 miles of your home.

I would suggest looking at the ACORP website but I don't think all the adopted stations are on it.

It depends on which level of adopter they are - you need permission from Northern to do things like gardening and planting. The simplest form of adoption is to perform a check at the station once a week.

No I don't think they are, unless a group of people has adopted the station. Out of all the stations that Northern run, only 3 or 4 do not have an adopter, which is a lot more than I thought it would be.

What does adopting a station actually entail?

The extent to which Train Operating Companies (TOCs) have become involved in
station adoption schemes varies enormously, from companies such as Northern Rail, almost all of whose stations are adopted, to others - notably inter-city and London & South East operators - many of whom have no or very few stations adopted.

The simplest form of adoption is to go to the station and check everything is in good order every so often. Further up the ladder you can look after the gardens and planting, and even go as far as reopening closed buildings for community or business use.

I posted a thread in May which has since been locked, however I finally got a reply to my query today regarding adopting the station in Pemberton.

I'm a bit surprised I got a reply and can't believe it's took nearly 6 months to respond to my email however I'm still keen to adopt if anyone else still is. We could meet up somewhere and discuss further?

Are you sure that Southern do it as I would like to adopt East Worthing, my local, just down the road and it would give me something to do of a Sunday evening?
