You could try splitting at Huddersfield. I think the Crewe-Hudersfield SVR is restriction 8A so valid for use on any train.
Huddersfield to York I think is only valid for trains arriving in York afer 09:30

do TPE have any advance fares available?

The following is the cheapest I can see:

  • £09.50 Standard Advance - York [18:12] to Manchester Piccadilly [19:33] (or £17.50 for a First Advance - only £8 more)
  • £09.00 VT Only Standard Off-Peak Single - Manchester Piccadilly [19:55] to Crewe [20:27] (or £12 for a VT Only First Class Single - only £3 more!)
  • TOTAL: £18.50 (or £21.50 if you travel First Class between Manchester and Crewe, which I'd definitely recommend as you are extremely likely to get a sandwich and some alcohol!)

Considering a move to Memphis
I usually split at Huddersfield and Leeds when doing this journey. [ Trains usually stop in Leeds long enough so you can go over bridge, buy ticket, come back over bridge and still catch the same train ! ]

It is true that TPE services have a lot of lag time at Leeds ... but may I ask why you don't buy all the tickets you need beforehand?!

I also agree with All Line Rover's suggestion to pay for First Class on the Manchester to Crewe train. For only £3 more you are very likely to be served food and drink upon departure from Stockport or Wilmslow.

Could you do me some times and cost for the outward journey from Crewe in the morning?
