I am 'thinking' of travelling to Hebden Bridge on Thursday to sample the delights of the local boozers.

Now I will be travelling after 10am and leaving on the last train of the day or the next day.

I've found that the price is £17 which isn't that bad, but does anyone know how to get this any cheaper? Could I go from Sheffield to Huddersfield then onto Hebden Bridge (the national rail enquires doesn't show this route)

There is an Off-Peak Day Return for £13.30 if you definitely decide to come back the same day. You could split at Denby Dale for Off-Peak Day Returns priced at £5.60 and £6.10 (total £11.70) if you only want the Penistone route.

Yes, of course. This is the shortest route from Sheffield to Hebden Bridge and so is permitted. You can also break your journey on as far as I can see any of the tickets mentioned in this thread so can stop at Huddersfield.

Great call, Mutant Lemming,

The SY/WY day tickets make a good combination because they join up properly. For instance, Denby Dale is in W Yorks but is also covered by the S Yorks card. You have to use a train that stops at the changeover station, but if you are going via Denby Dale they all do.

With sufficient stamina, you can use the W Yorks ticket to do the Yorkshire part of the Rail Ale Trail (Dewsbury WR Refreshment Rooms through to Marsden Riverhead). If you do a quick google you'll find a pdf for a Penistone Line Rail Ale Trail too.

If you live in S Yorks the Daytripper ticket will of course get you from home to the station. They work on the tram, too. They are certainly available on the tram and I think on First and Stagecoach buses. Be very clear what you want or you'll end up with one-operator bus or bus/tram ticket, they really push them at unsuspecting people. I saw it happen today. Make sure to mention 'trains' and 'all of South Yorkshire';

I don't know where you get a WYorks one before you reach WY. Perhaps on the train as Denby Dale is unstaffed. Best check the WYMetro site first.

At Huddersfield, as well as the Head of Steam, don't forget the Railway at the other end of the station. By the way, if you register with Northern's website they have lots of vouchers to print. One of them is 20%? off food at the Head of Steam.

Well I know it's a bit "Islington cum Hippyville On't Moors" but I've always liked it (healthfood and bong shops next to window displays of lamb-knackering shears) . Does your cryptic comment hint at secret knowledge.....?

Hmmm... It's not all it seems.

Yeah I know it has a big drugs problem (made a film about it called Shed your tears and walk away) but it's still rather beautiful to visit for the day and lot's of nice places for real ale and walks around there.

Also lots of single women that last time I visited. Didn't get very far with my chat-up lines for some reason.

Some great pubs though.

Well living just 3 miles from Hebden Bridge, I am on speaking terms with many 'Hebden Bridgers'. As has been said there is a drugs problem, especcially with teens. On a warm day the park is full of stoned teenagers and like any town centre, keep away on friday and saturday nights. As has also been said, nice place and during the day the pubs will be fine. I'm told most of the pubs in the area are nice and friendly, enjoy. :)

Damn. Just the same as any other town then!

Not quite, Hebden Bridge has a disproportionally high population of lesbians, try Halifax or Todmorden if your in the area. :)

Hebden Bridge is an absolute gem of a town, it's just a bit too Ye Olde Worlde for my liking (like Ludlow). Every town in the country will have some troublesome youths, just don't go there at night and stick to the town centre and you'll be fine. The station (and cafe in particular) is very nice too, very traditional.

Can the WY Dayrover be bought on the train? I am 100% sure that they can't be bought from Sheffield station

If you mean the non-scrathcard one, then AFAIK it can be bought from any booking office or guard in the country. If the clerks at Sheffield told you it couldn't, then this isn't the first instance of dodgy advice from there!

From WYMetro Site

Family DayRover
for groups of up to five people (up to two adults and up to three children/Metro concessions or one adult and up to four children/Metro concessions) or just two adults on both buses and trains.
£10.30

Adult Train & Bus DayRover for one adult on both buses and trains.
£7.10

MetroDay for one adult on buses only.
You buy it on the bus and it's valid on all services at any time.
£5.20

Adult Train DayRover for one adult, valid on trains only.
Buy it at staffed rail ticket offices, or on the train if there is no staffed ticket office.
£6.20

West Yorkshire Concessionary Train DayRover
for one child (aged 5 to 15) or other concessionary passenger valid on trains only.
Buy it at staffed rail ticket offices, or on the train if there is no staffed ticket office.
£3.10

So it doesn't say where you can get the bus/train one from (a pity, might have been useful around Hebden Bridge, as the really good pub is a bit of a walk from the station) but it clearly says you can get the train one on the train or at unstaffed stations.

Even if that means (for some reason perhaps known only to Sheffield Station staff) just WY stations then you are still OK because Denby Dale is unstaffed so the guard will sell you one (hopefully without making you step off the train and back on again!).

In my experience, Sheffield ticket sellers are very helpful (and so are the Northern guards on trains from Sheffield).

Perhaps at Sheffield they tried looking up the bus/train one rather han the train-only one?

I bet someone on here can tell you the code for the Dayrover, so all the ticket-man has to do is type the code to type into his tickety-machiney thingy (I'm a bit new here!)

Someone tells me the code is K701, and that although you can't use that code as a destination from Sheffield, you CAN use it as a destination fron Denby Dale.

So I assume there is no reason Sheffield can't physically sell you the ticket, if they use Denby Dale (or anywhere else in West Yorkshire, presumably) as the origin station.

I have read reports on here of Sheffield refusing to sell tickets from stations other than Sheffield. However, I think that might have been something to do with a few particular stations which some dodgy types try to use as an origin to Mancheter to save a bob or two (something to do with the mysteries of doubling back).

I suggest giving them another go by chatting them up and explaining exactly what you are doing. It may be best if you have the SYPTE ticket to show them, so they can see you have paid for the first bit. When the ice is broken, ask them to try using Denby Dale as the origin, and K701 as the destination.

I'm almost certain that will work. Otherwise, the best plan is to talk to the guard before you get on the train , show him your SYPTE Day ticket, and explain you'll need to buy a WY Bus/Train dayrover at Denby Dale because you can't get it at the ticket office. I bet he'll look at you gone out for making such a fuss and say yes.

I did say earlier that all Hudds trains from Sheff stop at Denby Dale, but you'd better check that for yourself, just to be sure.

.

As an addendum to your excellent post, Darton is also a dual PTE station. so if your train is going that way and stopping there, you can use that too.

(Barnsley station sells the WY Day Rover (train and train and bus) on the special coloured stock too.)

I did Sheffield/Huddesrfield/Brighouse/Hebden Bridge/then bus(lovely journey) on to Oxenhope/Keighley/Leeds/Sheffield last year. Connections were awful.
All buses/trams in SY accept Daytripper @ £6 (and trains after 9:30)
I could not buy a West Yorkshire Rover ticket at the station as "they had not got the correct blanks but go to the bus station". There I was told that they had sold them in the past but not anymore.

Told the friendly guard who reluctantly sold me a WY train rover but he was "not supposed to".
Don't miss out on the pub/cafe at Huddersfield.

Just another quicky.

Say I was to travel with the South Yorkshire Daytripper and the West Yorkshire Dayrover. Given the state of the weather at the moment, if my train from Hebden Bridge is delayed and this results in me missing the last train back to Sheffield, would the train operator (in this case Northern) have to get me home as the ticket is a PTE one?

Don't some of these tickets have to be sealed into some sort of wallet when being issued?

The ones you buy in advance in W Yorks or S Yorks are scratchcards that work like ones all over the country. To prevent fraud they have a sticky plastic cover which you seal down once you have scratched off the date (or dates, for the weekly and monthly ones) you are travelling.

The SYPTE all-services ones you buy on the day in Sheffield are just on ordinary bus, tram, or rail stock and are printed with the date.

The bus companies' own tickets vary by company. First's weekly one, for instance, is sealed in a plastic strip.
