There is a picture of a DEMU at Tunbridge Wells Central deputising for EMU's in snow in 1988 in Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith's Tonbridge - Hastings Album.

A couple of years ago the Hastings Thumper was used for some mainline services into Charing Cross. Can't remember why though.

It was more than a couple of years ago...it was when the 205/207 Thumpers were still running. I can't remember the reason why, but I recall a mate of mine doing the 17.13 'Thumper' from London Bridge to East Croydon, back to Victoria for the 18.01 departure to East Croydon, then back to Charing Cross for 1001 which left around 19.00. Quite what the 'normals' thought of 1001 appearing on a train some 20 years after its withdrawal I'm not sure (though I suspect some didn't event notice!).

I can recall two occasions in the Portsmouth area when D..E.M.U. stock was used instead of E.M.U. stock, Both times in 1987, the first was in January of that year, because of snow causing problems, I remember catching in to Portsmouth a super train of a Class 33 with 2 x 4Vep/Gig coupled to a further Class 33 with 2 x 4Vep/Gig, all electric units burnt out! I was suppose to be on duty until 22:00hrs and was told to go at about 21:15, because a special was being run from Portsmouth Harbour to Waterloo via Guildford and it was likely to be the last train that evening because of the conditions. It was formed of a 3D class 207 unit. Seem to remember quite a few staff catching it, all heading in the compartments as they where lovely and warm!
The second was much later 16 October 1987 in that year and a 3H class 205 unit was used to run shuttles between Portsmouth & Havant, that being the day after the great storm!

Yes, I can remember being quite dissappointed at not being down there at the time for those.

I suspect the normals probably wondered why their usual trains didn't have such comfortable seating !

Didn't some class 205 trailers get used in the 1980s on the north London line?

I believe some of them turned up in EPB's from time to time, although whether any of these made it to the North London line, I wouldn't know.
