A steady 25°C in a Siemens 350

I've just got in after travelling from Euston on the 17.34 LM Euston to Birmingham New Street, an 8 coach Class 350 set.
After a short while I started to feel warm, and I measured the air temperature at 25°C. Is this the design temperature?

Perhaps the 25°C I measured is to increase the sales of bottled water?

Except LM don't have a trolley. I suspect it's more to do with the spurious yet common assumption that because it's cold outdoors it must be cold indoors :roll:
Was the coach full?

Was it a 350/1 ora 350/2?

The temperature on our trains is always too hot. I've always found this to be rather uncomfortable. I will pass this information onto fleet on Tuesday.

I wouldn't say 25 degrees is too hot. Just pleasantly warm. Most A/C systems seem to aim for 21 degrees, and that's only 4 degrees difference.

I would say 25 is too hot. Anywhere between 18 and 21 is about right. Personally I'd be happy with 15C yet that's probably too cold for most people (I feel the heat :()

One of the many things I hate about desiros, they are always boiling hot inside, rubbish air con.

This is why I always make a beeline for the seat nearest the air con ;). The only thing I don't like is the lack of humidity

Yeah im usually cool on desiros. But i feel the heat too so i love it and usually choose the 185s when making trips up to newcastle.

Im sure i've read somewhere the air-con is set to 21 degrees or 18 degrees

TPE got a lot of complaints when they introduced the 185s and the air con was set to 18oC. They did introduce them during a heatwave when exterior temperatures were in the high 20s.

25oC is too warm for a British train most of the year. Although normally when we think of 25oC we're assuming bright sunlight and high humidity. In other countries they can have 25oC, cloudy with low humidity which makes it feel very different.

21 for me please (and 18 during the hottest days of the year), 25 degrees is far to hot for a train.

I find the aircon on Desiros to be quite good mostly, although I think that the best aircon on any train is on the 175s. Set to a nice, cool temperature if you ask me.

The coach being full will have caused extra heat, I could certainly see it making it the 4 degrees warmer

Heating, ventilation or airconditioning will always suffer from different peoples expectation of a comfortable temperatue.

Airconditioning has a benefit in that it can remove humidity. This provides a lot of comfort as it means the perspiration we produce can evaporate which is how we humans cool ourselves. So we feel cooler even if the temperatere is higher. Moving air (like an open window) helps by replacing the humid air in a crowded carriage with drier outside air. That does not really apply in humid countries (or humid weather).

One thing that depresses me is that in summer some air conditioning works hard to reduce the temperature to what feels colder than winter !. Conversely in winter we all have more clothes on but for some reason the temperature is set high in a bulding or train.

We humans are hard to please. For temperature we really only notice a change. So when we think it is cold it is infact colder than it was. Many people find December bitterly cold but by January/February we feel OK because the temperature has not fallen much further. We also feel hotter if we have been excercising. We have all experienced people who come into the office and have to open a window. They have just come from home or lunch. They close the window later once their breathing/heart rate goes down.

As for trains. I have regularly sat in a rammed 377/2 (Croydon - Watford, regularly leaving passengers behind at Clapham Junction). My ankles being painfully blasted by airconditioning coping quite well with the large number of sweating bodies.

Nearly all trains without opening windows are too hot for me, Voyagers are a surprising exception, as are the SWT Desiros.

Never travelled in a Class 350, so can't comment ;)

Sorry, I've no idea - I was more interested in reading both pages of the stations list.

The 350/1 (blue seats) I've found are better than the 350/2 (green seats) at having a comfortable temperature.

Spot on. Supposedly, the system on the 350/2 stock is 'more advanced'. This is, of course, a railway term meaning 'crap'.

If it's insanely hot in a coach, then it's almost certainly a fault with the air con, in which case it's definitely worth wandering into an adjacent coach. If you're on a 350/1, that coach should be cool. On a 350/2, it'll just be too hot to a lesser degree.

15-18 for me any day! At 25 I'd be on the floor, fainted in a pool of sweat! :x

The aircon on the Desiro sounds better than the office I work in, even if it is at 25C. At least the aircon on the Desiro works....;)

At least your office has air con of sorts. I once measured the temperature in an old office as 36C in summer. Even in winter 24 is about average :(

One place I do work in has the windows open in winter because the heat is so high and VERY unbelievably stuffy. No aircon there but the heating is such a waste of energy. I have actually blocked up all the heater vents but still not cool enough in winter, no sign of a thermostat. So any aircon would be better I dare say.

Compare that to the compartment in a Mark one corridor coach. I remember wallowing in the glorious heat with the heater controller accessible to the passenger :D.
