Sat Assesment day at Doncaster today privatley..

Passed Everything except the one I was dreading the MT4.1! And only by a couple of points apparently. GBT was a perfect score and I got a good score on reactions.

Ive passed the day and will get my certificate with MT4.1 shown as fail.

Im pleased but at the same time a bit unsure how to proceed as it it only really Scotrail I can apply for..
Advice would be apreciated and if anyone needs any info about Assesment day ill try to help

just after some info on the structured interview
Test 6 – Structured Interview

After all the ability tests are out the way with, you sit a Structured Interview with the assessor. The Interview is structured, so everyone gets asked similar questions.

There are 5 main questions (these are emboldened). Once you answer each of these, they ask a lot of probing questions about each one. NOTE - Even though everyone get asked the same core questions, the PROBING questions vary a little, so do not guarantee you will get the same probing questions. The interview lasts for about an hour to an hour an half on average.

1. Describe a time when you dealt with an emergency situation?
2. Describe a time when you had to solve a difficult problem
3. Describe a time when you have had to attend a training course lasting longer than 2 weeks?
4. Describe a time when you have had to work alone for long periods
5. Describe a time when you had to follow procedures?

NOTE - To pass the Structured Interview you HAVE to meet the following criteria:

Criteria

1) Motivation to follow set Rules and procedures

2) Ability to remain calm in emergency /stressful situations

3) Conscientiously works to exceed course demands

4) Able to communicate clearly and effectively (in both written and spoken terms)

5) Checks: does not make assumptions

6) Is proactive and tenacious

7) Able to work alone for long periods

Anything that you say in your answers that suggests to the assessor that you do not always meet the criteria above will result in a Structured Interview fail resulting in an Assessment fail (with 1 of your 2 chances gone)

If you need info on the trainability test (Glop) I've got loads on that as well

Most of Beveridges post covers it.

Just give good examples
And be prepared to go into more detail on each question.

I found interview straight forward and enjoyed most of the day.

Few guys from Northern recruitment drive were there one didny pass reactions and one guy passed interview and other lads were going in as I ledt

What happens if you've never really been involved in an emergency?
Would they fail you on that?

I don't want to be a party Pooper but think Beverages post should be altered to not show all the answers because this is not fair on other candidates and could result in the wrong person getting through which could be dangerous!

Not really. All that information is already available on the net anyway. And you've still actually got to be able to give some examples! :D

Is worth doing the assessments privately? I have looked into it and I do not know whether it would be beneficial. Is it an avenue that would be good to go down and how do TOC's feel about individuals going private, is it an advantage or hindrance?

It's a hindrance to me because of what I said above and it depends.

I done it so that I could get experience of the whole process and if I passed all of it I would use it as a positive things in my application.

It was for me a worthwhile process

why isn't it fair on other candidates, if information is readily available that can assist someone and they have the nous to go looking for it then find it then good on them. do you also think it's unfair when people post train driver vacancies here, enabling more people to apply therefore diluting your own chance of success.
where exactly is the danger in someone being successful in applying for a job because they have a head start on the process due to a poster telling them what to expect.

I have found that it's the person who gets the information themselves by sifting through this forum and other media who pass the tests and get job offers, you check back on the posts in this sections, nearly all the people on here who are banging questions out that have already been answered do not get through the interviews - it is very rare that a wrong person gets through an interview even if they know the questions, an interviewer well a good one can tell easily who is and who isn't good for the role, the source of those questions is a prime example so anyone reading this use your nod, get the info yourself and try not to rely on or take for gospel all that is posted on this forum.

I thought you had to pass all elements of the assessment in order to gain a "Pass"?

Because MT4.1 is not Core and is an
Additional extra that not all TOCs require.
I have spoke to Scotrail who have said that I will only need to resit that one part.
Arriva Trains Wales dont need it apparently and neither does FCC.

Still looking to get advice for better study material for MT4.1 it wasnt anything like Mechanical books and How to become etc

Are you referring to me when your trying to say the source of those questions is a primee example of someone who isn't good for the role? (Seeing as I posted the Structured Interview question set?) or have I just misunderstood your sentence?

If so then what you said doesnt make sense seeing as I'm already in a Driving role (Depot Driving) that required passing exactly the same process as the mainline

There is no study materia I have heard of that is good for MT4.1 as the Barrons Books and How2Become are all for MT4.2 which is cog and pulley based. Your better off trying to remember what questions were asked in 4.1 and finding the answers out for next time.
