BRB Residuary Ltd own the site, but as its derelict it would be pretty hard to get permission to visit.

I know it's derelict, I just wondered whether there was a way of getting access.

Would Network Rail be able to grant access as I do work for them?

It is a pity that the platforms are too short for 400m trains without ripping down the trainshed and realigning the whole thing.

Big holes in the platform floor, and 50ft drop down to the floor deck.

Its reserved for Government development, was a big office park planned there before the election centralising several Government offices in the North West on one campus and allowing space for more to move from London; the so called 'Whitehall of the North' since the election with the cuts to budgets and jobs its on the slow burner, not officially cancelled but not breaking ground either.

Some great photos,

I would not advise following in their footsteps.

Good photos, amazing that the station still exists. Has anyone got any pictures of the station in use? I remember work in progress out on the tracks to bring it into use during the extensive re-arrangements at London Road - oops, I mean Picadilly - and the southern approaches thereto. And . . . . I remember reading that the engineer for these works was a woman - quite rare in those days.

Wishful thinking maybe but would there be any merit in reopening this an an annex to Piccadilly? Might just help out with capacity issues?

Apart from lots of money what would make the above a non - starter?

I doubt it as I was under the impression that Piccadilly needs more through platforms not more terminating platforms.

Just dug out my OS map for Manchester (an achievement in itself :D) to check out area. Ok, why not punch a few holes in the building and run a few through lines on viaducts to connect with the Picc - Ox Rd line just to the west of plats. 13/14 (?). Problem solved.

See it's grown arms & legs already! Give me a few minutes and I'll have this linked into a new TPO (with apparatus) service from London via Mayfield, Bolton, Hellifield, Settle, Carlisle, & a reopened Waverley route to Edinburgh! :p

Seriously though I think it is a right shame to see our old railway heritage lying abandoned and unloved. Even if it cannot come back as a station a sympathetic refurbishment would be nice.

One day at Picadilly recently, I was told by a member of staff that platforms 14 and 15 (is that right - the 'through' platforms?), he said "they do more business than the rest of the station!"

The objective of the Northern hub is to remove conflicts at the approaches to Piccadilly. Reopening Mayfield would only re-introduce that very problem all over again.

Although the high numbered platforms inside the main station (10-12) are not as quiet as I first thought it would seem much better to spend any money to bring those into a more useful state (as well as build 15 & 16) than reopen a station I am sure the LNWR would not have built in the first place if the MSJA had not got in the way with their station.

Indeed. Picc is to get new through platforms. Plus if tram/trains do get introduced the need for terminating platforms will lessen. So reopening Mayfield is the wrong answer to the wrong question.

Well, I guess a remote possibility is to move the Pendolinos to Mayfield so that HS2 can be placed in Piccadilly.

If you really squeeze you could get 400m. platforms in a reworked Piccadilly (acquiring a little extra land at the throat and rearranging all the tracks) and some 350m. platforms in a reworked Mayfield, also with a bit more land at the throat. A tight squeeze but just about feasible. And the transmogrifying of short terminating trains into through trains helps.

Somewhere, not in London
Or just flatten the whole industrial estate and build the HS2 station in a conflict free way, keeping the station building of Mayfeild, but a whole new set of platform alignments.

You can't send pendos into Mayfeild because the fasts are in the wrong place, but the land is available for viaducting and 4 more tracks from Longsight to "Mayfeild" so one could give independent lines for the East Manchester Lines, Fast Stockport, Slow Stockport, Airport and HS2, removing all conflicting moments except between the Slow Stockport and Airport, that can be done by sending Cleethorpes onto Liverpool via CLC rather than Airport and a new loopround service via the Hope Valley and Sheffeild for Manchester Airport.

Remember this is having to be built alongside an operational railway, and any changes to the current Piccadilly will be a massive amount of hassle.

Curzon Street station in Birmingham, whilst boarded up, looks to be a far more attractive building than Mayfield station in Manchester could ever hope to be.

Manchester Mayfield willl be renovated in 2014 to make it the Northern Hub for the Manchester Airport Trains. You cannot gain access because its classed as a danger zone. I work at Manchester Piccadilly Maintainance Depot.

Really? The old rumour mill is working overtime I see, with its usual lack of accuracy

Mayfield belongs to a developer (not BRB or NR), and the Hub is looking to build through platforms west of 13 and 14, but preferably without demolishing the Macdonald Hotel. It may also not demolish the Star and Garter, but I can live in hope ...

One proposal a while back was to build a bridge over the lines from Ardwick Junction to Mayfield for TransPennine services. I think Mayfield was last used by Royal Mail trains in the 1980s.
