Good choices. 37s 40s and 56s are like my big 3, if you like!
I've very much diverse when it comes to AC leccies, 90s may be modern and should have been 87/2s, but I still think they're good engines. They scream when they are at full chat. Good locos.

Thanks! Yeah ive always like 56's, always thought of them as more beastly looking 47's with of course a better sound!

Although it could be 31 for the diesel loco - standing on a bridge in complete darkness at night with one of those passing underneath is quite impressive.

The only thing that was a real shame regarding the Grids was that they were freight locos. The only passenger haulage came from railtours and the odd Class 1 working when the booked XC 47 would fail!
Never had the pleasure of that unfortuntely. Had a fair few tractors on XC but never a Grid! :( I had 58005 on a Class 1 once, if that counts!

Sorry for sounding like a dribbling treat here, but it's a pity there wasn't an EH version of the 56s...

There wouldn't have been quite the same fantastic sound from a 56 working "lightweight" passenger trains though: The scream of a 56 being worked flat out on a rake of 36 loaded coal hoppers was an absolutely incomparable spectacle! Those monsters used to shake the ground when they passed the house I lived in when I was a kid, amazing things. I've always thought that there's something deeply aggressive looking about a class 56 viewed from the front: It must be the cluttered front end layout combined with the sort of "Cyclops" look created by the central headlight.

I'm debating whether I should have stated by favourite diesel class as 56s, rather than Deltics, I've always been keen on the 56s.

Very true. Can't argue with that.

Well, it is the better option in all fairness!

For me

EMU - 365 (when they were running on 3rd rail don't really like the smiley face that they have now though) and 466 and of course the slam door stock (mostly 411, 421 and 423 though)
DMU - 121 or 171!
Diesel loco: class 67
Electric loco: class 87

DMU: Class 175 (when they work)
EMU: Class 377/3
Diesel Loco: class 37 (No wonder after the number of times I bashed them on the Rhymney valley services.)

Electric Loco: class 92

Intercity: HST

Steam all the same

Loco, individual - 4468 Mallard
Loco class - A4 (as you might guess from <--)
Diesel, HST in original form
Electric, I grew up with Class 91s and still call them Electras
Freight, really wish I'd seen the LNER Garratt, but probably Class 60
EMU, the Clacton units because they went right by my grandparent's house, although I never travelled on them
Current EMU, probably the 365s, because they are decent units that do a decent job
DMU, the honest, dependable Class 156 Super Sprinter

Just to add, coaching stock - the best general service coach I've ever travelled on was a Stanier SK on the SVR a few years ago. I wish I'd been able to sample the Coronation set; the nearest I've ever got was one of the observation cars on the GCR, armchairs and a bar while travelling behind a Jubilee. Apparently, it was less comfortable than the third class section of the train, which is unbelievable!

Best current stock would probably be the MML MkIIIs with original seats, although I've never been able to compare them with the GC ones.

Got to be the Class 101 for me. Each unit had its own character.
