Yes I know this was discussed a couple of years ago but the thread is now locked and the answers I want are on there.

I wondered if some kind people could help me. When I travel by train I almost only ever travel on Northern Rail trains for various reasons however on Saturday I’m on a TPE train from Leeds to Hull and then back again.

I’ve booked first class for both journeys and have been allocated a seat number simply because I know the return train in particular will be packed because it’s the only service back to Leeds after the Hull FC v Leeds Rhinos RL match.

I’ve read various horror stories about standard class passengers on TPE invading first class and taking up seats that aren’t meant for them.

As I have an allocated seat number in first class, does that mean I can ask anyone that is sitting in my seat to move? Or do TPE simply allow a ‘free for all’ type policy on trains that will be overcrowded, I expect the 21.33 out of Hull to be EXTREMLEY overcrowded. I really don’t care too much if standard class passengers are allowed in first class without paying more but I really don’t want an hour of standing up after I’ve specifically paid for a first class seat.

As I’ve mentioned before, I am simply a train enthusiast/spotter. I do not, sadly, get to travel on them very much so I’m not up on ‘etiquette’.

Any advice would be greatly received.

As long as the reservations are printed and displayed then I would say that you are definitely well within you rights to ask anyone sitting in your seat to move (and if they won't seek the train guard for help). If the service is going to be really busy there is a chance that first class will be declassified (in which case you should be able to get compensation from TPE) but the seat reservations will still be valid and to be honest I don't often see TPE services that have had first declassified.

Basically as long as there is a foul up with printing the reservations you should (if needs be) feel perfectly entitled to kick someone out of your seat.

Don't think it will be much of a problem on Saturday Night. Rhinos Fans more likely to go on coaches I'd think? And the last one out of Hull's not busy.

You might get one of two from Selby(going into Leeds)invading first class and not paying for it, but that's nothing new.

As for the traincrew enforcing it, if you've got 80 people against 1 person what do you think they would do.

Thanks the replies.

Usually out of Hull i'd get the Northern Rail service to Goole because I usually stay at my cousins after the match and those trains and usually packed.

I remember though from standing on the platform after the previous games the TPE trains always seem really busy heading back to Leeds and with this being the only service after the match I would expect it to be packed.
