I don't wish to scaremonger but I thought I'd make a pre-cautionary post...

This is a serious warning to anyone thinking of visiting Sheffield on Saturday. Some will know the League One football season ends on Saturday afternoon, one of Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United will be promoted in 2nd place, the other will be in the play-offs. Wednesday take on Wycombe at home, with an expected crowd of over 38,000. United face Exeter away from home but plan a beam-back to their ground with possibly 8,000 going to that.

Come 5pm I expect tensions to be a little raised in the City Centre and there is a potential for trouble. Saturday is in a different category of importance for both sets of fans, there will one set of fans rather unhappy, its not a friendly rivalry. I'd just advise a bit of caution and wary of it in the City Centre. Nothing may happen but I don't want to read of people being caught up in something. Also traffic on roads will be gridlocked to the north west of the City from 1 till 3 and 5 till 6:30 ish. Don't use Junction 36 of the M1 at all, the road into the City Centre passes Wednesday's ground.

Cheers

Tom

Sorry, Tom. I know the Owls have the upper hand but, "Up the Blades!"

Two Wednesday fans as friends and the opportunity for banter is too valuable to lose. :D

Quite a few on here as well, one of whom is among my closest friends on the forum (don't say it! - you won't understand this unless you know who I am referring to). I have to say, ever since you-know-what with you-know-who in you-know-when I have had a bit of a soft spot for Sheff U.

I would have to suggest though, good advice. Anyone here who is going to either Hillsborough or Bramall Lane - please be careful.

As a fellow Wednesday fan (I'm not going to the match) I would echo what you say. It definitely isn't a friendly rivalry. I have supported Wednesday since 1969. It's important to stress that I do not hate "The Blades". Some of my friends support the team.

Big ditto there from me. A hell of a lot of my friends are blades and we never have argued argued about football let alone fallen out and fought about it. Its just banter to us and something to be social about, nothing more.

However that does not mean to say that some arn't like that... :/ which i find a shame. I also support leeds carnegie rugby and go to their games and its great not to see police and to stand with away funs and discuss the game its something i think that would add to football if all fans could just behave.

But yeah avoid sheffield as im sure some will go to gloat and some will go to look for a fight... we will see come saturday, if wednesday dont get promoted dont expect to hear from me for a fair few days :(

When I lived in Sheffield and was a regular at The Wednesday in the 1970s and 1980s it seemed like quite a friendly rivalry to me - the real venom seemed to be directed towards Leeds United. Perhaps things have changed since I last went to Hillsborough in 1990.

If The Wednesday don't get promoted I'll just shrug my shoulders and think it's another typical Wednesday cock-up.

Yeah typical... exactly what i am afraid of. But i am younger so the typical still kills me, im sure in 10 years time it will just be a shrug of the shoulders for me too. Much like it is with my dad now. :)

I'm trying not to imagine that prospect. We'll see.

I'm not sure why that should be so? Yes, I have known, for awhile that there is animosity, between some SWFC and Leeds fans. Owls fans don't like Barnsley either.

As far as I can remember the two matches between the sides this season saw arrest numbers in single figures, which is pretty reasonable for crowds of around 30,000 and a derby atmosphere (and AFAICR includes those arrested well away from the ground too).

If you want bother this weekend then there are places I can recommend to look for it, but then that's the same for any big city on any Saturday night - I doubt it'll be that different in most "normal" pubs etc though.

If that is the case then I must say that it is very impressive. Well done to both sets of fans for the effort.

There have been suggestions Sheffield United fans will be out in Sheffield looking for problems if indeed Wednesday go up. Some may decide that my original post is nothing but scaremongering.

The fact there were single figure arrests at the derby games doesn't mean anything on Saturday. One side is going to be promoted, the other will not and has the play-offs. Saturday is in a whole different league to a derby game.

Given that the derby games were two matches where supporters were in the same stadium as each other, plus there was a "beamback" at the other ground, I think that they are a reasonable benchmark for how this weekend is likely to be.

The Police did a good job in segregating people where needed, things seemed to go off without significant problems (I think a door on a tram was damaged, for example).

Maybe there'll be anarchy on the streets, who knows, but my hunch is that it'll be just another Saturday with football supporters.

I thought the season had already ended with Saints promotion back to the premiership (Which is obviously where we belong) and Portsmouths religation (Which is obviously where they belong)?

Yeah, the Championship ended last Saturday. League 1 and League 2 were decided today.
