This is not a misconception - as long as they are on silent and don't cause disruption I see no problem with texting etc. in the quiet coach.

I was refering to talking on them, playing music etc etc. Of course texting ok. Never made my point clear!

Texting might be ok, but what is it with people who have to have the keypad clicks/beeps turned on?

Or people whose phone is so old that the keys click loudly of their own accord (as I used to)...

I have to admit, more than once I've been in a quiet coach, bored, and decided to play a quick game of Tetris. And then realized that last time I played it I had the volume up, so this time when I boot the app then Korobeyniki comes out of the speaker at full blast and I have to hammer the volume keys to turn it down...

- If somebody in a uniform tells me something that I interpret as this is my train, every other announcement or instruction concerning destination and/or ticket validity could not possibly apply to me!
- Every train leaving Paddington and Reading stops at Didcot Parkway
- If I am challenged over anything by a member of staff, as soon as I tell a member of staff I want their name as I am going to complain about them, they will instantly apologise and back down over whatever the issue is.
-If I am on a STD class ticket I can stand in First Class. Any jobsworth who asks me to move is in the wrong, and has no authority to do so.

"If I touch in with Oyster at a station but don't touch out at the station I'm going to then just get back on the train back to my original station it won't charge me"

There was some woman claiming this at Canada Water yesterday...I was tempted to do a face palm into the wall.

See, you could correct her... or you could let her rack up two maximum fares and let her learn for herself. I know which I'd do

-If I refuse to give my details for a UFN, there is nothing the Guard can do, and if BTP turn up they won't care, and it won't be pursued.

(Oh hang on, that one is right)

A Coast and Peaks rover is valid at any coastal resort....
. . . or any peak.

Which reminds me of another obvious one: a Network Railcard entitles the holder to discounted travel anywhere on the Rail Network.

Maybe this deserves another thread? Perhaps "Common Public Misconceptions which happen to be true".

I have enjoyed discussing such "misconceptions which are true" in other contexts. Perhaps we could do the same here? I haven't the courage to post those that first come to my mind (loopholes in Railway Law) but there might be other takers?

Public and Enthusiast misconception

If a guard/train manager/ RPI/ me manning the gates asks you for your ticket you can make any old excuse up that you don't have one and then kick off and you will be let through.

You can buy on board or at your destination if your starting station does not have a booking office and you want a rover or other ticket not sold by the machine.

Thats a misconception? How are you meant to buy it then? Or are you trying to say you should buy any other ticket and get it refunded? You are still buying the ticket on the train or at the destination though.

Thats a very good misconception though, because I wouldnt buy anything from the machine, and would just get on the train.

The more you shout the more you will get away with.

If you add the words "genuine mistake" and "you have got your discretion" you will get away with your travel irregularity.

No, that one's true. Have you not been paying attention at your conflict avoidance briefings? <(

You are required in that instance to purchase some sort of ticket that allows you to commence your journey, and pay the difference in price on board or at your destination. If you don't you can conceivably be charged an anytime fare, PFed or prosecuted, though I have not heard of any of these ever happening in practice.

TOCs do nothing to inform passengers of weekend engineering works.

(Apart from periodic announcements throughout the week, reminders on departure boards, notices on TOC sites and National Rail and Engineering Work posters in THE SAME location every week on stations.)

Additionally engineering works are done merely to inconvenience the passenger and no other reason

I am pro rail travel, but with all this confusion with tickets giving my a**e a headache. I would rather drive
My Service is door to door
It leaves and arrives when i want
I get a seat of my choice
I get meal service ( if i take my own food!)
I can break my journey where and when i want
The form of transport is
not overcrowded, is not populated by drunks, loud mouthed businessmen on mobiles,or screaming out of control kids
The cost per mile by my diesel volvo is about the same
I can go by ANY route i want

EG i wish to go to Carlton Colville for the Trolleybus fest
Train 4 hrs each way and the nearest station i can find to lowestoft is NORWICH, for pricing purposes £56 ret 2nd class
Driving 3 1/2 hours and 340 miles door to door Car does 45mpg £50.00

Downside i drive instead of someone else

Bit of a no brainer for this journey
The TOCs are pricing guys like me OFF of them and if i were taking a car load the costings are even more weighted in the cars favour

This breaks my heart

Like most motorists (and apologies if it's a company car and you really only pay for your fuel) you are ignoring the other costs of running a car, some of which (tyres, servicing (to an extent), brake parts and other consumables, depreciation (to an extent)) are mileage related and others (capital cost, insurance, road tax, etc.) are fixed but still have to be paid for.

And rail travel is - often - a lot less hassle and more enjoyable than sitting in a car, often in a traffic jam.

Rail travel on many cross country and inter urban type routes away from London and the South East, on weekends, is anything but enjoyable.

Unless you count the pleasures of trying to fight your way onto a grossly overcrowded 2 or 3 car DMU for the pleasure of standing, squashed like sardines in the doorway with hardly room to move, for hours on end enjoyable. Not forgetting to add in the mandatory non working toilet(s) (because it is a weekend not everything has been tanked), lack of luggage space, no doubt faulty air con / heating (depending on time of year), large groups of cackling pi**ed hen parties, large groups of pi**ed loud stag parties, and if you are really lucky missing your train altogether as you can't actually fit in the door (as per TPE most weekends, and some recent experiences on Northern and XC).

No, even as rail staff, If I am making such a journey I normally travel at times to avoid weekends / Friday evenings.

Now lets be fair here, I have never been on a train fitted with air conditioning units that are not working in the winter months and the heating always works fine in the summer:roll::lol:

Indeed people often forget the opportunity cost of using the time on the train in a value-adding manner.

Companies that have banned First Class travel for its employees due to obsessive bean counting are paying a price. Nobody wedged in Standard Class stands a chance of doing any work!
