Rishton to Stockport Off-Peak Day Return £15.50 routed via Preston is valid via Crewe - use it as far as there from Preston.

Crewe to Birmingham Off-Peak Return £11.75 if booked in the London Midland online sale.

Birmingham to Bristol Parkway should be split at Cheltenham Spa.

Birmingham to Cheltenham Off-Peak Day Return £22. (Hideously expensive journey!)

Cheltenham to Bristol Parkway Off-Peak Day Return £8.20

Should save you a few bob.

If time permits you can travel via Worcester which will save another £10 or so by splitting there instead. You must be sure to travel via Worcester using this plan though, which will add anywhere from 45 minutes to nearly 3 hours to the journey.

No good to the OP the last train that will give a connection via Worcester to get back to Rishton is the 1510 from Bristol Parkway. Good idea though :)

Can somebody confirm that is Rishton to Stockport via Preston is definitely vaild via Preston as the Virgin guard from Preston to Crewe was certain it was not valid.

If going to Bristol Rovers, Filton Abbey Wood is marginally nearer the ground.

It appears to be slightly cheaper to split at Wolverhampton rather than Birmingham, since a Wolverhampton- Cheltenham Off-Peak Return is only 30 pence more expensive than a CDR from Birmingham, but then of course the train must actually stop there (in both directions), although I think most, <if not all>(?) do.
CRE- WVH SVR: (£17.10)-> £8.55 on LM site
WVH- CNM SVR: £22.30

I can find no evidence that a ticket from Rishton to Stockport is valid via Preston. However, if the ticket states that it is routed "Via Preston", we are getting into awkward territory - and said ticket definitely does exist.

Bit late now...

Probably not. No-one has yet devised a system to calculate the "best" splits, although people are working on it, it may never happen given that "best" is highly subjective (e.g. if you save 10p but the journey takes 30 mins longer, is that better? what if you saved £1 for 10 minutes longer?).

However, for future reference, if you can tell us what you've found so far, and what sort of itinerary you had in mind, then we can work with you and may be able to provide some suggestions for improvements.:)

(By the way, the "Title" field is only for use when posting a new thread, it's not needed for subsequent replies, and anything you enter there cannot be read by all users of the forum)

Preston is not a permitted route, but there is a Route via Preston fare available.

If you use a ticket routed "Any Permitted" then you should be charged a change of route excess fare. If using an Off Peak Day Return the excess fare would cost £1.70 (both directions) or 85p (one direction only) at current prices (NFM11).

The East Coast booking engine suggests travelling from Rishton to Stockport on this ticket is perfectly acceptable on the xx24 from Rishton, connecting to the xx17 from Preston and ultimately the xx11 from Crewe (which needn't be used).

If you use a ticket routed "Any Permitted" then you should be charged a change of route excess fare. If using an Off Peak Day Return the excess fare would cost £1.60 (both directions) or 80p (one direction only).

The ticket is valid via Preston but you need to ask the guard to issue it via Preston.

It's daft really. What would be so much simpler is if Preston was a permitted route, the Route Preston fare could be renamed Any Permitted. There could be a Route Not Preston fare at the cheaper price.

A ticket routed via Preston is valid via Preston, yes.

When you buy a ticket, and there is a choice of routes available, the ticket issuer should give you the option to purchase the ticket that most suits your needs. If this does not happen and you are sold the wrong routed ticket, then a change of route excess can be obtained. There is no 'penalty' for this, and you should only be charged up to the fare you would have paid.

If you wish to travel by a cheaper route one way, and a more expensive route the other, you should be sold the cheaper routed ticket, and an excess for the other portion.

Please could someone fill me in: how can there be a ticket via Preston when Preston is not a permitted route? Can TOCs offer routes above and beyond those in the Routeing Guide at a higher fare than the Any Permitted fare?

The fact that Preston is not a permitted route is the reason for the existence of this ticket.

Yes.

See this post by IrishDave (part of Change of route excess with different ticket types thread) regarding a Route Burnley ticket, on a flow where there is no permitted route via Burnley.
