I will believe this when I see it still it would be nice and I suspect could be a good money spinner especially in China etc

Coal fired? Riveted rather than welded?Whatever.
Fair play to the chap if he manages it.

Should be painted in LoadHaul livery, though...

Now, if we can be sure that this shouldn't have been published on April 1st and is a month late, 3 years seems a rather optimistic delivery schedule for something of this size which would surely be very much a unique bespoke design, and Chinese shipyards have never ventured into the cruise ship market before, so that'd be a first in itself. Nevertheless, although I do think that all this Titanic memoribilia has all got a bit tacky, I'd actually welcome something like this, since modern cruise ships are just gigantic entertainment complexes; it'd be so nice to have something that looks like a ship once again. (Although Disney have made a gallant attempt to come up with something like that with Disney Magic and Disney Wodner).

It would be interesting to see if this actualy does happen.

A few years ago a South Affrican tycoon wanted to do the same. But that was shot down because of how astronomical the price would have been.

Still though, I hope it does come around. Same as Schnellzug says, it will be nice to have a ship that actualy looks like a ship!

Whats with this navy escort they want to give it though?

Sounds like he sees it as something of a flag waver for China as well (which, if they could complete in in that timescale, it would indeed be.)

Actually he wasn't that stupid..
"Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it,'' Mr Palmer said in response to questions from reporters on whether the Titanic replica would sink.

* Incidentally, I wonder if White Star ever did actually claim that Titanic was unsinkable, or whether that was journalistic hyperbole?

The makers claim it was the journalists wot said it (although the Vise President of the White Star line appears to have repeated the claim - after the ship sank but before he found out):

I wonder if Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio will be on its maiden voyage?

I'll believe it when I see it; I have lost count of the number of Titanic II schemes announced in the last 30 years or so; I recall hearing about one in the early 1980s that had a bit of press coverage. That one might have been by Texan millionaire and Titanic fanatic Jack Grimm?

Didn't something think about salvaging the original one, or I may be thinking about that film?

There was a film on that premise (which while totally ridiculous is good piece of fun) but I have a feeling that there have been ideas from time to time floated ;))) that suggested raising the Titanic, but most of those I think were before it was discovered that she did, in fact, break in two.

If this fella manages to get the thing launched, I would imagine he'd do very well out of it. Assuming that steerage will be replaced with more expensive suites, how much could he get away with charging for a trip on the maiden voyage?! :) Seriously, £20 grand a cabin or somewhere around that mark? Once in a lifetime and all that. He might sound barking but actually I'd have though it's probably a pretty sound proposition. As for construction costs, she isn't that big compared to the usual liners these days, and presumably her design is relatively simple? Pretty much plain old ship with lots of fitting out, rather than a complex design in itself?

If the VS oriental express can charge £5,475 then I'd say Titanic II could easily charge £20k for a cabin!

There were one or two suggestions put forward about raising her. Some completley bonkers, others quite good.

Of course most of these were put forward before the wreck was discoverd, then they thought she was sitting there pretty much in tact.

Yeah compared with todays ships her designs seem relativley simple to me. To be honest, with the size of most ships today, hers could be considerd just a standard size. Rather than the giant she was then. I wonder how this thing is all going to work out though to be honest, for example, her insides were considerd a bit of a maze. And I don't think the lifeboat positioning would pass. That positioning isn't alowed now apparently. Don't they have to be all tucked away now, and not just sitting up there on the deck?
And I'm not sure what people will reckon to sailing on a ship without the shopping malls, theatres and international airports that are packed onto todays ships.

They can easily charge a premium on voyages, effectively it would be a sailing 'museum' or at least recreation.
Then they can make millions by giving tours when in port, and a whole load of other possibilities.

My big questions would be about the recreation, think we all assume it would be oil powered , but what about one recreated boiler room?
Also, not sure who will be willing to pay a premium on the traditional 3rd class cabins and food mind! Guess there could be a few 'recreated', have a slice through the ship which recreates the original!?

And presumably they'd need rather more of them.

Like this??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Britannic_postcard.jpg

That is a Picture of RMS (HMHS) Brittanic, Titanics sister. She was completed after the Titanic disaster and as such took on board (pardon the pun) the Board of Trade's reccomendation that lifeboat space for every soul on board was provided. They were stacked in threes on extended davits. Not that the extra boats did much good when Brittanic herself met Davy Jones.

Other improvements to the safety could be radar (as opposed to 2 freezing scousers with no binoculars). And watertight bulkheads that go up to the main deck and have a water tight deck over the top (as opposed to the fairly useless system they had on Titanic), and a better crew, don't let any of William Murdoch's decendants anywhere near the bridge.

Maybe if this guy can pull it off, then it would be a good thing. A sort of visable memorial to the people that lost thier lives that night. Maybe if they put aside space along a corridor to have the names of all the people lost with the original Titanic.

Thats not a bad idea, wouldn't be surprised if he impliments that some how, he did say he wanted to keep it as much like the original as possible, bar the modern doosies

Possibly. Despends on the size of the boats realy doesn't it? The MS Queen Elizibeth has fewer boats than Titanic did, but carries more people and the boats of course accomodate them all.

Would they be permitted to use inflatable liferafts, as found on most ships in my experience, or are they not acceptable for 'long-haul' vessels and use in mid-ocean? These could presumably be stowed in such a manner as to be less visually intrusive. No doubt the original lifeboats could be portrayed on deck in their original positions, even if they were there only for show.
