I'm visiting a mate for a start of summer/end of Uni party and will be travelling outwards from Longbeck (LGK) on the 16th June travelling to Manchester Piccadilly (MAN), I'm looking at leaving LGK on the 0802 service changing at Middlesbrough (MBR) and arriving into MAN at 1119. I could change to a later service but I'd rather travel on this one. I shall be returning on the 17th of June travelling from Manchester Victoria (MCV) and returning to LGK. Due to engineering works all but one MBR service is leaving from MCV and there is only one every two hours, due to the fact that I don't have a clue when I'll be able to leave my friends I can not be restricted to a specific train on the return portion of my journey. I have a 16-25 Railcard and shall be travelling by myself.

I've been playing around and the TPE student offer throws up one fare at £10 for my outward, but due to me having to buy an Anytime Day Single (£29.05) on the return it ends up being more expensive than just buying an Off-Peak Return (£31.90). I've had a bit of play around with splitting but I've yet to come up with anything (possibly because I'm knackered ;)) so I'm wondering if anyone can better the £31.90 fare? Again just to reiterate I can be restricted on the outward part of my journey but have to be flexible on the return.

Also just to check with TPE North services if you want to buy a weekend first upgrade you just sit in an available seat and pay when the guard comes through (£6 I believe) you don't have to ask first before sitting down?

No obvious walk up splits on this route, I'm afraid.

For weekend first, yes just board, sit in first and pay the supplement to the guard when he comes to check your ticket.

Yeah I didn't think there would be. I suppose that's problem with quite a few routes in the North already being fairly reasonably priced (250 odd miles for £30 isn't exactly daylight robbery).

Cheers :)
