I'm thinking about using the caledonian sleeper from preston to Aberdeen, does anyone know why Preston is not on the list of departure points on the bargain berths website and if it is apceptable to use it to get a "ticket" from london but get on teh train at preston?

You cannot do that, you need to pay a berth supplement in addition to a Saver fare.

If you REALLY want a bargain berth from Preston, the ONLY way I know of to do this (other than go to London yourself! ;)), is to get a mate to go from London. Providing you book at the same time you can be in the same cabin, and your mate can say that there are 2 of you.

You cannot simply join at Preston as they will mark you down as a no show.

Heading south, getting off at Preston is no problem - just tell them that you'd like waking up there.

Yorkie is right. I've also heard tales (many years ago) of berths being resold at Euston for 'no shows' - I'm not sure if that still takes place or not. You wouldn't want to get on at Peston and find your berth had been resold.

I'm not sure why the bargain berths are only available from Euston and not Crewe/Preston as well. Maybe if you do e-mail them, it would be worth posing the question?

Wasn't there a problem a few years ago with attendants selling unused berths prior to departure and pocketing the money? That's possibly a myth though.

Perhaps it's in case the train is diverted to not call at Preston and Crewe (IIRC around the time bargain berths were introduced, the trains were regularly being diverted via Manchester and the S&C)? The tickets are so cheap Scotrail may not want the expense of having to get bargain berth passengers to/from Preston and Crewe if the train is diverted.
