Hi all, a little help if you can please?

Next week, I'm planning on doing a journey to Bristol Temple Meads (BRI) from Paddington (PAD), but need to stop off in Reading (RDG) for a couple of hours first.

Looking at Advance fares, it looks like it will be cheaper, but I understand a "Break Of Journey" is not allowed with these ticket types.

So to save me some £££, would I be able to use a Super Off-Peak YP Return, to break my journey at RDG around 1600, then get back on at a later time?

Cheers :)

Break of journey is permitted in both directions, however, the following restriction applies from Reading:

Restriction YU said:
Tickets are valid:

On services timed to depart
Reading between 1030 and 1530,
and from 1901.

So if you were to break your journey at Reading you'd need to resume either before 1530 or after 1900.

Also the restriction from Paddington is:

Restriction YU said:
Tickets are valid:

On services timed to depart
London Paddington between 1010
and 1501, and from 1901.

So the last train in the afternoon you could catch from Paddington to Reading is the 1500 (arr 1525).

That depends on the time. This ticket has evening time restrictions from Reading. I'm on a mobile device at present, but hopefully someone will be along soon with specific details of this Restriction.

Correct. Assuming you intend to leave the station at Reading, you would need separate London-Reading and Reading-Bristol tickets.

That may well be allowed, it depends on the ticket's restriction code. Please could you clarify, would it be a Bristol-London return or a London-Bristol return? Do you intend to break your journey on the outward portion, return portion or both?

Apologies guys, it's PAD - BRI return, and will break my journey on the outwards portion.

Ah, cheers ainsworth74. So just to clarify, if I'm on any train that leaves PAD before 1501 for RDG, and any train that departs PAD for BRI after 1901, the break of journey can be made/resumed with the Super Off-Peak ticket?

Thanks. :)

Restriction code YU applies; as with most FGW flows BoJ is permitted on both outbound and return.

As others have said there are evening peak restrictions so make sure you're on a train from PAD by 1501 and leave RDG after 1900. (There is a blanket ban between these times on this ticket, unlike ex-Thames Trains flows e.g. PAD-OXF, so you can't avoid it by getting a stopping train.)

Monday to Friday there are restrictions.

I believe the restriction for a Super Off-Peak Return from London is 'between 1030 and 1501 and after 1901'.

I believe the Off-Peak Return restriction from London is 'between 0810 and 1640 and after 1831'.

Slightly better than that - the restriction is "valid from 1901" from both Paddington and Reading, so you can take the 1911 (change at Parkway) or 1927 (direct), both of which leave Paddington before 1901.

Or for an extra £3.10 use a route; Warmster-Salsbry SVR ticket which is unrestricted out of Waterloo in the evening and is valid on trains departing Paddington as follows:

Paddington -_Depart between
0930 and 1559 (incl.), or at
1916 or later.

Bit of a long way back to Bristol though.

this happens, the restriction

Hmm? The only CDR I can see is £44.50, restriction J9 and routed Via Evesham. Anyway, tickets routed Via Evesham wouldn't be valid via Bristol...

I ment Tonbridge and Yes Evesham is in the Cotswolds so not valid.

Didn't get much sleep last night so I'm clearly going a bit scatty now.

Depending on pricings, it *may* be cheaper (but less flexible) to buy an advance from BRI to RDG, a day single (or return, if returning the same day) from RDG to PAD, and an advance from PAD to BRI (or RDG, if returning the same day).

Doing it that way I would invest in a Thames Branches Day Ranger for £16.40 to cover RDG - PAD
