Just a heads up that Clapham Junction station is closed and no trains are stopping (but they can pass through). This is due to a major power failure affecting computers, lighting (I believe) and all sorts of other electrical/electronic equipment at the station.

I suspect the diminished UPS devices for the safety systems and the lack of lighting may have been the final straw leading to closure, which I imagine is for safety reasons. This issue has been ongoing for some time this evening!

To paraphrase NRE:

London Overground WLL services start/terminate at Imperial Wharf. Use bus C3 if you need to travel between Imperial Wharf and Clapham Junction.

Customers should change trains by using local buses or the Tube, or select the correct trains from stations up and down the line. Bus route 37 runs between Clapham Junction and Putney.

London Underground and London Buses are accepting tickets.

(This information is current as of the time of posting - 2205hrs)

No estimate is available for when services will call again.

Does that mean they are coasting services through the station or has it not affected traction current?

I do not believe traction current itself has been affected in any serious way at this stage, but I may be wrong.

EDIT: Some delays are occurring on SWT due to an emergency PASCOM possibly being activated in the area, and I am told that some of the signal phones are out of order. Also, a generator should be on site by 2230hrs, although I know precisely how useful these can fail to be, so it's fingers crossed there really...

EDIT 2: A generator is now expected to be installed some time after 2330hrs. There is also emergency engineering work affecting London-bound services between Wimbledon and Clapham Junction.

Here's SWT's advice:

Line problem: between Wimbledon and Clapham Junction. Owing to emergency engineering works between Wimbledon and Clapham Junction trains have to run at reduced speed on london bound suburban lines.

Impact: Train services running through these stations may be delayed by up to 10 mins at short notice. An estimate for the resumption of normal services will be provided as soon as the problem has been fully assessed.

---

Line problem: at Clapham Junction. Owing to electrical supply problems at Clapham Junction fewer trains are able to run on all lines.

Impact: Train services running through this station may be revised at short notice. Clapham Junction will not be served. Disruption is expected until 23:30 10/05.

Customer Advice: Although the lines through Clapham Junction are all open, there is no lighting on the station. Therefore no trains will call at Clapham Junction until further notice. Customers who would normally change trains at Clapham Junction should do so at London Waterloo. Customers who would normally leave or join trains at Clapham Junction should either use local buses or London Underground, both of which will accept South West Trains tickets. The best connections to local bus services are at Wimbledon and Putney. At Putney bus route 37 runs with a 10 minute frequency to Clapham Junction, also running past Wandsworth Town station, and East Putney Underground station is very close to Putney mainline station for connections to the District line.
There is currently no estimate of when the station will reopen as the electrical failure is affecting the whole Clapham area, and EDF engineers are currently working to restore power as quickly as possible.

A generator is being installed at Clapham Junction and it is hoped that this will be in operation from around 2330.

Underground services are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

Local bus services are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

Southern Railway services are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

Would have thought the traction current would use separate power, which is useful in cases like this as trains can still run. Think problems were first reported towards the end of the evening rush hour, but obviously as it got darker - there was no lights so it had to close.

Does that explain why I'm currently passing through Addlestone on the way to Woking on a Basingstoke service that was supposed to stop at Surbiton? Wondering if that CJ situation has caused this..

This would appear to be one of the handful of services that are booked to use the District line via Southfields. So perhaps it had to be diverted away from that, but since it's started on the Windsor side of everything it has no option but to go round the houses via Chertsey.

EDIT: Indeed this is true. No trains are running between East Putney and Wimbledon due to a signal failure at the latter.

Yes, thanks - that would make sense. There's a London bound stopper held here at Woking to take us back in the right direction.

First report was actually around 1730! The emergency lighting was on though, however obviously this seems to have run out...

It was earlier than that! From about 16:30 the power went off and it hadn't been restored by 23:30 when I left the station! The SWT site announced from about 00:20 that trains were stopping at CLJ again and that the station had re-opened.

I was working late shift at one of the gatelines and first noticed the power problems when the barriers suddenly all opened and booking hall lights/tvm/ticket office went off! I didn't expect it to last that long though, it was a right pain for Oyster PAYG users who could not touch in and out anywhere in the station. I've no idea if TFL will set some sort of auto-complete for unfinished journeys, otherwise they will be getting many requests for refund!

Many passengers were quite rightly surprised that there was no service for a few hours out of Europe's busiest station! ;)

I can confirm what TSR said about the PassCom being pulled, as there were BTP in the station trying but failing to find the culprits, they selfishly delayed other services just so they could get off at Clapham..

I had one first thing this morning. Was news to me about the closure as I was offline last night. Sounds like you had a right evening of it.
