Hi
I have been off the Loco scene for a while due to work commitments and my recent change in circumstances have left me with a little more free time.
I am a die hard fan of Diesel and electric locos and have some days off soon and was wondering where are some good stations to see a few freight services or passernger haul. I am not a big fan of DMU'S.
I am based in South Wales and will probarly go on a few day returns.
Last year I visited Manchester, Liverpool, Portsmouth, London, Paignton and Bristol without a lot to show for it. (The good old days are long gone sadly).

Thanks

If you are heading up to the north west, Acton Bridge is worth a look. It's not the biggest station in the world, and is in the middle of knowhere if i'm honest!

BUT! You get all the west coast trains, pens , voyagers etc, 350's and lots of freight (60 66 70 90 92)

Good luck loco hunting! Sadly it's too true that the good old days are long gone :(

There are some good ones on the WCML which include Rugeley Trent Valley, although I'm not that familiar with the area. Carlisle is also a good place with plenty of variety. On the ECML Doncaster is the place to go.

I can only second what has been said as being the premier spotting locations for locos: Newport, Doncaster, Stafford and Carlisle.

Stafford or Tamworth would be better bets than Rugeley Trent Valley, as at both you get freight coming up from the Birmingham direction as well as the stuff along the WCML Trent Valley.

How are the staff at Carlisle in terms of photo taking & generally being seen to be hanging about for a while? Would it be an idea to apply to the station manager first or just make yourself known to station staff?

The station staff at Carlisle have always been totally accepting of the small congregations of enthusiasts that frequent either end of the island platform in my experience, they very much seem to be a part of the station furniture. Nothing more formal than making yourself known to station staff should be all that is needed.

Never had a problem at Carlisle and never needed to sign in either. With each long distance train there is normally another spotter getting on or off.
