Sleeper stock continued in the end using a rescue loco from Old Oak Common, currently around 1 hour later at Camborne.

Fancy being turfed out of your cosy bed in the middle of the night into a unit. I would not be a happy bunny! <(

If there is a failure, what do you expect them to do? Let you lie in bed and wake you up at 6am, only to then tell you that you will have to catch the next train and will be several hours late?

My comment was indeed tongue in cheek! I don't think most people are happy being woken from a cosy bed in the middle of the night when they least expect it.

Indeed, yes, I would want to be taken to my destination!

On a serious note, when the railway was not run a shoestring - there would have been a loco on standby near enough to take the train forwards as it was!

Indeed it was Failed Unit! Well spotted!;)

Maybe I should have done a winking face as well as an angry one!

Most likely, yes.

But you have to admit, there are times on here when it is hard to tell! :D

He he, correct. It makes me chuckle when people get themselves worked up over not a lot! I prefer to live in the real world!

I would be cool calm and collected, until I found out the said until was a pacer or 153. From sleeping to very uncomfortable in 5 minutes. ;)

Indeed, but had I been on that sleeper, I would greatly sympathise with your comment, no matter how tongue-in-cheek it was! I would also be very cross that OOC had the nearest locomotive. It comes to something when all the locos within even the vaguest definition of the vicinity are all on preserved railways (come to think of it, it probably would have been quicker to scramble a nice steam loco!).

I would rather be woken at a reasonable hour and be late, thank you very much.

Also, would the driver not be in trouble for hotboxing the loco? Surely that's a bit irresponsible.

They did, but 57602 had to travel from Old Oak Common, and a driver had to be found who signed the route and loco, at 2am that isn't the easiest task. In the end 150108 ran an additional service from Taunton to Penzance at 0525, with the sleeper stock running ECS a couple of hours later, crewing issues precluding it running in service.

It would be awesome to wake up and find that you'd been hauled by a steam loco overnight...

Hang on, if it's a problem with the loco, why not simply attach another locomotive in it's place?
I think the point was that the nearest locomotive was a long way away (old oak common) and would have taken a long time to get there...

It had to run down to Taunton so that it could take the stock to Penzance for tonight's up sleeper. There would have be nearer locos, probably some Freightliner 66s at Taunton but not much use on MK3s.

A 150/1 - with 3+2 seating. Maybe the closest they have to beds now the 142s have gone.

My idea of hell! I'd hope for at least a 158, although they don't work much (or even at all) in Devon and Cornwal.

I wouldn't disagree, 150/1s on long distance routes is never good. In fact they are probably the most unsuitable units in the fleets (as the 143s can't go to Penzance anyway).

It makes you think that in the 1980s the 150/1 was BRs flagship unit and did many long distance journeys such as Ipswich - Leeds and Birmingham to Lincoln

Because Mr. NetworkRail would be very cross when that locomotive's hot axle box collapsed and either derailed the locomotive or set it alight.

Does the word replace not mean anything to you? Take off that locomotive and replace it with another...

Even if it ment shoving a random 66 on from EWS until the 57 could get there to pull it, or getting one of the ETH fitted 67s from Cardiff to take it...

With the failure rate of the 57s i would have more back up in place to be honest. Personally if i was FGW id be looking at the surplus virgin 57s.

I once went to sleep in Kings Cross with a 47 on the front. Woke up by Spean Bridge to find a Class 27 + Class 20 combo on the front.

It was a long, long time ago!

You can't run the sleepers with an non ETH loco though, so a 66 is useless. 67s would be problematic, as finding a driver would take a while, no quicker than getting the 57 from OOC.

No booked work in Devon and Cornwall, crewing would prohibit them working any service in Cornwall apart from on a Sunday when there are diagrams entirely worked by Exeter crew, working in Devon is easier crewing wise. Penzance and Par local crew lost 158 knowledge a couple of years ago and Penzance and Plymouth high speed crew never learnt 158s when they learnt units.

I can't believe you managed to sleep from KX to within 10 miles of Fort William without waking up.

As it happened at Taunton, surely the WSR could have stepped in to provide something? <D

Mathematical substitution; you don't get that every day!

Incidentally... is there any reason why the sleepers aren't hauled by 43s? It would save FGW having to have a small selection of different locos to the rest of their fleet (this largely ignores the fact that I guess all the 43s are on normal HST sets...)
