I am planning to visit Newcastle in July and return 2 days later. I was just wondering which would be cheaper going direct or changing at Edinburgh ?

I am planning to travel on the first or second week of July. I do not mind departing in the morning but the return journey must be after 12pm.

Id advice going on the direct EC trains and booking on the EC website. If possiable go down on the Tuesday and return on the Thursday to give yourself the best chance of the cheapest advance fares. You should be able to do it for less than £40 rtn if you are in a position to book now or soon. Others on here may know some split ticket options if you want more flexiable tickets

Aberdeen - Newcastle Advances on the direct train(s) seem to sell quite fast, in part due to the oil rig workers returning south.

Straight splits on that route can only save about 7% of the ticket price. Advances for mid July can still be got for £20 each way, but book them as soon as you can for the best price.

I'm from Gateshead but visit Glasgow quite frequently. Unless I'm mistaken Buchannon Bus station is just up from Queen Street rail station. It's only a 10 minute walk from Queen Street to Central station.

The advance price system is crazy even though the train goes through Edinburgh it is cheaper to get on a Glasgow.

After how many pints? :D
No, seriously, i's more than enough time.

In fact if you don't mind an extra journey and a (small) amount of sightseeing, you would have time to take a train from Glasgow Queen Street Low Level out west to Partick, and then take a train to Glasgow Central Low Level - 23 or 24 minutes usually. It would take less than 10 minutes to walk to Queen Street from the bus station to do this.

Curiously, NRE inquiries won't give a fare for this but it won't be that much. (£1.70 single to Partick, £1.80 Off Peak return if they'll let you go to Central instead of back to Queen Street. Worst case - another £1.70 single Partick to Central).

You would get to see a lot of tunnels :) plus a glimpse of the scenery near the new Riverside Museum. Might be marginally more interesting than hanging about Central Station for the extra 50 minutes after walking direct from the bus station.

One thing to point out and I know you've mentioned you plan to travel in the 1st or 2nd week in July. St James Park is hosting some of the Olympic football games at the end of July. Whether this will have an effect on train ticket prices or availability I don't know. You should be fine if you're going the early part of the month.

I've booked the train now from Glasgow to Newcastle with Cross Country at a good price. I would be in trouble either way because there will be olympic matches in Glasgow and Newcastle.
