Hi,

I'm travelling up North for a friend's 30th later this month, and we're doing the Real Ale Trail from Manchester across the Penines. I was recently studying the best day tickets for this (as a lot of hopping on and off is involved).

I found the following:

  • Greater Manchester Rail Ranger
  • West Yorkshire Day Rover
which should be suitable for most of the stations, but my reading of the zones covered by each ticket means we'd also need a ticket from Greenfield to Marsden to cover the void between the two zones. Is this correct?

Also, as I live in Kent, and will be catching the train up on the day of the real ale trail, is there any way I can purchase those rover tickets prior to travel i.e. via Southeastern's ticket site (a WebTIS site)?

You would indeed need a ticket between Greenfield and Marsden with those rovers, you would also need to use trains that stop at those stations for that part of the journey.

If you get a return ticket for the length of the trail, you can hop on and off along the route provided you don't double back.

I'm not sure about websites, but you should be able to get them at any manned station.

Have you already made firm arrangements for your travel from Kent? If not, a ticket to Huddersfield may give you the required flexibility.

For example, a £115.20 (Railcard £76.95) Ashford Int'l - Huddersfield route ✠ Any Permitted Super Off-Peak Return has restriction 9D, is valid on HS1, allows breaks of either or both legs of the journey and allows travel via York, Leeds, Sheffield, Wakefield, Bradford, Manchester or Warrington.

The ranger sounds good. The Manchester - Leeds day return ticket for that route - does that actually allow you multiple breaks of journey though? The restrictions on NRE state "A break of journey" is permitted, but don't explicitly state multiple breaks are allowed.

At least with the ranger you are safeguarded against any interpretations of the rules.

See post 2 above from HHF

Well, yes, hence why I quoted it myself!!

My question was more along the lines of "am I going to come across any guards who may see my already-clipped outward portion and question it".

"A break" does not equal "multiple breaks" - there is definitely room for interpretation there.

A South Penines Day Ranger may work out better anyway, as we can alter the route if we like then - we don't necessarily have to do it in a straight line, and can double back if we wish.

It's fine - you're allowed as many breaks of journey if you want (I don't think there are any tickets which restrict the number of breaks of journey that you can have, if it allows BoJ?). Guards will be fine with already clipped/hole punched tickets, especially I suspect on this line - after all, the ale trail is a common trip.

Unlikely, but if they do, just tell them you've broken your journey and provide whatever details they ask for.

If any guards incorrectly claim only one break is allowed, then we'll deal with that if it happens. It must be very rare as I can't recall any cases of that happening.

Rovers and Day Rangers allow unlimited travel in the areas for the period of validity.

(The West Yorkshire Metro ticket is actually a Day Ranger, not a Rover, they just call it a Rover for no apparent reason)

You might also want to give consideration to which day of the week you do the trail on (unless this has already been decided). Weekends and Bank Holidays are getting very crowded, to say the least.

Yes, it seems to have become a kn**head "Booze Cruise" rather than a pleasant day out appreciating a combination of scenery/trains/interesting pubs/good beer. Nice one James May and Oz Clarke. How long before all the pubs do Carling ?

The WR Refreshment Rooms at Dewsbury isn't usually included, it is brilliant and will be less crowded.

Similarly, the Railway Tavern at Huddersfield is less well known than the Head of Steam. And the BrilliantPubICan'tRememberTheNameOf at Slawit is further from the station than the other one is.

With a South Pennines Doodah, you can also go to the Scarborough at Leeds and the Sheffield Tap on Sheffield Station.

BTW. your ticket from t'South may be cheaper to Sheffield.

For a 'stomach liner', try Black Peas at Stalybridge Station Buffet.

Cheers for the advice quys!! I shall keep the info in mind :D

I'm committed to it being a Saturday, as it's for someone's 30th birthday, and so it's all arranged already.

I also got my train tickets up to Manchester in early....got the £17 advances (VWC+CONNECTIONS) in both directions so a total of £34 all in :D
