I've noticed that when I buy tickets from many of the online retailers the travel reservation tickets come with my personal title (Mr) and surname printed on them. If I were to buy tickets for a female family member would she arise suspicion if using one of these tickets and what is the law on transferring tickets as in this scenario ?
Thanks.

It's absolutely OK. You are allowed to purchase tickets for others - what you are not allowed to do is transfer tickets bought for yourself to others. In practice no-one will bother you if you're not openly selling tickets.

Not only is your intended purchase perfectly valid as LexyBoy says, but the Conditions are to be re-worded to make it even clearer that it is valid to buy tickets for another person, and furthermore, to make it clearer that it is valid for a company to buy for its staff in general.

Actually, from memory ( I do not have them to hand) I think the new conditions actually say that you can transfer a ticket to another person provided the tickets do not have the name of a passenger on them.

EDIT:
Just gone back and checked my post in another thread. I posted the following when I had the new conditions to hand:
Condition 6 regarding transfer of tickets has been amended to make clear that unless a ticket is issued to a named person, it can be used by the person who bought it or anyone on whose behalf it was bought. It states that tickets cannot be resold for a value. It also mentions tickets purchased by a company being valid for anyone employed by that company, unless the ticket carries a name.

Great news and thanks. The ticket is for an elderly aunt and I will also be getting her a SNR discount as she holds a valid railcard. I was just ever so slightly concerned that she may me queried when presenting her ticket and railcard, the former having my name printed upon it.

I remember years ago GNER would not accept my partner into GNER time as the tickets had my name on them (well some of them did) bar stewards. The solution was simple enroll at home and work ;)

Most tickets I buy online now have my surname on. However on the positive side I have never had a gaurd ask for proof of my surname. Most people I buy for share my surname anyway :)

I forget which ticket website it is that causes not the cardholder name but your username on that website to be printed on the ticket. Possibilities for ensuing hilarity there.
