Many years ago, Wellingborough had a 2 road shed for stabling and refuelling locos. Now, when there were trains starting from the sidings nearby, this made sense, but I'm sure it was used into the 80's, well after the iron ore trains had finished. From what I understand, nothing loco hauled started or finished at Wellingborough, so what purpose would a stabling point like this have had in its latter years?

As an aside, does anyone know when (if) they pulled it down, because I remember walking round it about 10 years ago. I know that the building of the old roundhouse is still there, but that's next to where the depot was.

Cheers in advance

Hi Ian,

It wasn't just a case of where the various workings actually started, more one of it being the signing on point for Wellingborough Drivers... we have a similar situation at Rugby FLHH, our Booking On Point is just down the road from the station but we no longer stable our locos there, and anyway, the majority of our jobs start and finish at the Leicestershire quarries. There's been talk for several years of us moving closer to Bardon Hill but of course, it all comes down to money...;)

Back to Wellingborough Shed... a few weeks before the last buildings were demolished my mate was road learning down the Midland and managed to have a good look round inside and took some photos, I'll see if I can find them and post them here (might take a while though, I have a feeling they're still on my old hard drive).

I thought the stabling point closed when Finedon Road sidings were taken out of use which must have been around the time of the Leicester resignalling? How times have changed, Finedon Road is very much back in use and a slow line has been reintroduced for part of the route north of Kettering (I think!).

Not sure what year it actually closed but can find out, three of our drivers are ex-Wellingb'ro lads.

The slow line went back in a while ago and wasn't used straight away due to teething troubles with the signals, and even so, sometimes we still get stopped at Harrowden Junction to be put out fast line when the single line is clear.... only to be put back into the slow at Kettering South Jcn!
