I tend to try and include as much as I want from a layout and fill any spaces with what would be appopriate - current layout has terminus station, dmd and goods yard!

Chaz, are you a fan of Zontar?

Myself, I prefer Loco maintaince, as this gives high frequency moves..and the posibility of a freight yard or similar

I have a small countryside branchline layout and am working on a new 8ft x 4ft Port with sidings and a large station with six platforms!

I've chosen stations, as my proposed layout (when I eventually get around to finding some money for expansion of it!) is to be a realistic model of Hereford. I plan, though, to also obtain a Virgin HST, in a Challenger formation, for operations on the layout for modelling diverted HSTs between Bristol and Birmingham.

I've also fancied modelling Swansea, as it's a terminus station with regular (hourly off-peak, half-hourly peak) HST action as well as hourly Arriva TW services and occasional NMT and Serco trains. This has become less appealing since leaving Swansea though, but it is always an idea I will try one day. This layout is, of course, also interesting in that I would like to include Landore depot, which would make it different.

Of course, I do also really like the idea of marshalling yards such as Alexandria Dock Junction, Newport (Gwent), as this is a rather busy freight yard throughout the day with all sorts of traction. This is harder to model due to the immense number of wagons I would have to obtain, more so the hundreds of different types I would have to obtain. Of course, there is the realism level too, which would be hard to model due to needing a WTT for the yard.

I've always thought East Usk on the Bristol-cardiff mainline (just outside newport) would make a good layout.Up & down mains,up & down reliefs for passing trains & a small yard to shunt plus the connection to Uskmouth for freight.
Wouldnt take much room either if the mainlines were run as end to ends, then you could get clever & automate the mainlines whilst you could control the yard & the arrival & departure of freight into the yard.

You mean something like this:
