Walkden Signal box on the atherton line is it normal for trains to stop here as the Kirkby train stopped here today and ive used the line for 15+years yet never see a train stop outside there other than at one other time. the driver of the Kirkby train seemed to be having a conversation with the signal box man we where stopped here for 3 plus minutes and also had 3 wheelchair users yet still arrived a minute early into Victoria.

Also to my amusement Walkden Platform announcements Pronounces Kirk-By rather than a silent k as normally heard at other stations.

Then perhaps it was the signaller who wanted to relay a message to the 150 driver, IIRC there are very few SPTs along the route given it's all semaphore.

It's always a pleasure travelling the Swinton line, I grew up a few yards away from Swinton station. I still enjoy waiting for my train at Walkden and watching the Semaphores get pulled, the line has a really nice atmosphere. It will be a shame when the semaphores and boxes finally go :(

Incidentally there seems to be a fair bit of construction gear (equipment and supplies) at the far end of the platforms of most of the stations on the route, I take it they are refurbishing them to reinstate a full platform length?

Platform extensions yes, reinstating a full platform length no. Swinton and Walkden are the last two under that contract, though there are works still to do to finish some of the others.

Walkden SB, Atherton Goods Yard SB, Crow Nest Jct SB - all due to go 2012/13. Also Blackrod Junction SB where Preston PSB will link up to Manchester SCC.
