I am taking the over half and my little one over to the Isle of Wight next month and was trying to work out the cheapest way of getting there.

I am travelling with the customary friends and family railcard and my daughter is nearly 3.

Checked out the through fares on red spotted hanky and also splitting the journey up - and although the through fare from Slade Green to Ryde Hoverport worked out cheaper than trying to split the tickets and buying a seperate ticket for the Hovercraft.

I discovered by chance that using Oyster PAYG I would have saved a mere 80p by buying a ticket from London Terminals to Portsmouth Stations - using PAYG between Slade Green and London Waterloo.

So I went on to check how much an off peak return from London Waterloo to Ryde Hoverport was.....RSH shows no fare available!
Tried London Terminals again no fare available!

How can there be a fare from Slade Green to Ryde Hoverport but oddly not one showing from Waterloo?

I hope that makes sense!!!! :)

I can't check ATM but if there is no fare then it will be derived buy taking the fare from London Terminals to Portsmouth Stations (rather than Portsmouth and southsea I think) plus the appropriate add-on amount for the ticket type plus an additional add on amount due to the use of the railcard.

But I do seem to remember fares being available from London.

Edit: fares from London - Rye Hoverport for 2 adults & 1 child with F&F railcard attached (from SWT).

If cost is a big issue then you can save even more by buying the Portsmouth ticket from Surbiton. Slade Green to Surbiton costs the same on PAYG as Slade Green to London as long as you don't use the Underground.

A hovercraft service from Rye Hoverport to the Isle of Oxney would be dead handy for me! Can I use a plusbus ticket on it?

Don't know what you plan to do over there, or even if it's only a day trip. If it is for more than a day, I don't know if the below is of use but hey-ho:

When I went to the Isle of Wight, I was only going over for the day and had the luxury of either route from Portsmouth. As I'd heard the hovercraft were quite enjoyable, I watched some of them the day before my trip and they brought a big smile to my face just watching the arrival. Convinced I was that I should go this way, and discovered a rather useful ticket with Hovertravel.

A day return to Ryde and a day ranger on Island Line trains was available for just £15.50. It's doubtlessly gone up since September, but I'd always highly recommend using the Hovertravel route. It's incredibly fun and it's just disappointing that the ride's over so quick (only 10 minutes or so, depending on sea conditions), indeed if time permits next month I may pop on down to the hover terminal when I'm near Portsmouth and go for a quick visit to Ryde just for the sheer thrill of the hovercraft ride! <D

No idea but please bear in mind that these are route southern only and the hovercraft is owned by Southern but branded differently. :p

If you are thinking of advances then I don't think they exist and a ticket to Portsmouth with separate ferry and bus tickets would need to be bought.

I wasn't thinking of advances, but I'm wondering whether the OP wishes to stay overnight or return the same day.

And advances do exist between London Victoria and Portsmouth Harbour.

Although this saves money, it'd be more of a hassle as from Surbiton you'd have to change at Woking or Clapham Junction (assuming the purchased ticket allows routing via Clapham Junction) Thus doing this misses out on the fast trains out of Waterloo.

Yes, if you want to take the slow way to Portsmouth that is ;)

Have you looked at Megatrain for the Waterloo-Portsmouth stretch ? We have managed to get that (and to Southampton as well) for £1 each way for our trips to the IoW.

Sorry I didn't mean advances are not available from London to Portsmouth.

What I meant to say is that: if the OP wishes to buy advance tickets then they should buy one to Portsmouth as I do not think they exist to destinations on the IoW.

They do, I can and have brought AP tickets from Shanklin to many destinations. My Best was Shanklin - Edinburgh for £34 which includes the ferry!

I think what Wintonian is trying to say is that advance tickets are not available from London destinations to the IOW.

Worth knowing that there are now Route "Via Barnham" tickets to ryde hoverport from london Victoria. In your case this would save you nearly £40 on an off peak return

well ignore me then obviously whatever it was that I was trying to was wrong anyway. ;)

Having said that I have not come across one of these advances, but maybe that's because I haven't needed to look for one.
