They appear to have put third rail in platform 3 at Oxted.

Can anyone enlighten as to when/why this was done? I only just noticed it, it seems like a sensible thing to have stuck in.

Maybe they're electrifying the Uckfield line.... maybe not.
Or maybe they're preparing to electrify and re-open the Uckfield - Lewes route :D ... doubt it.

Perhaps so they can run East Grinstead shuttle services from Platform 3?

In all honesty I have no idea just throwing things out at random.

No idea how long Oxted P3 is, but i would have thought it would mean shuttles between East Grinstead and Oxted could go into the bay platform. Could be useful if the line is blocked at Sanderstead for example.

They'd need to sort out more than that I think, IIRC as a passenger train you can only exit the bay, inwards movements are ECS only, due to signalling constraints.

Work is starting which will provide more seats for thousands of passengers who travel on the busy route between East Grinstead and Victoria.

Over the next four years, Network Rail will be making a number of improvements to the infrastructure, including lengthening some station platforms and upgrading the power supply, which will allow longer 12-car trains to operate.

The bay at Oxted can only take 3 carriages. On random network rail documents you can find with Google it says 6 maximum, but the most I've seen is 4 with the the last one de-selected.

The best I've been able to come up with is that it could be useful in engineering work, but when there's work trains tend to go south from platform 1 (using the trailing crossover, you can't get directly to 2 or 3 from the South, a shunt is required), and platform 3 would normally be occupied by an Uckfield train at around the same time anyway.

East Grinstead trains tend to be quite long (they've just made quite a few off-peaks up to 6-car) so not many would fit in.

I'm still thinking it's a bit odd.

Not a bad sign though. Hopefully they just keep going.

How much of the Uckfield branch is single track?

What was the date of that? The latest CP4 enhancements plan reads:

"This project has allowed 12-car services to run on the route East Grinstead <> Victoria Central (fast lines from Windmill Bridge Jn)/ London Bridge (fast lines from Norwood Jn).

This project was complete as of December 2011."

It seemed to be fine with the 4 car 171 in there yesterday - looked to fit the platform completely from where I was stood.

I realised that it isn't signalled for entering trains as otherwise the Uckfield would go straight in there. It does seem a little odd that there isn't a facing crossover really as it would make life so much easier (yesterdays example was that the East Grinstead service was running late, which delayed the shunt, and could have therefore delayed the Victoria service, although I don't think it did...just!)
