The best you'll get going south would be 0940, 1140 or 1340 depending on the date. Those trains call only at Carlisle, Penrith or Oxenholme and Preston, only on certain dates though, check the timetable.

I use the 1630 often, it only calls at Preston.

I'd personally recommend it... it's not that heavily loaded. I never have a reservation and easily always get a 4 seats-to-a-table space all the way from London to Glasgow.

The booked time for this train is 4 hours and 8 minutes (passenger timetable) however I've been lucky enough to have a 4 hour 2 minutes run on it once, presumably because there was nothing in the way between Motherwell and Central.

EDIT:

Sorry I realise this didn't answer the question, having just noted that you're looking for a southbound train. However, I'll leave the post here, on the assumption that you'll want to come back to Glasgow ;)

In which case there's a good argument for some extra stops!

I agree, it's practically empty after Preston, and is within a cluster of trains during an hour period that head up to Scotland. At least Carlisle should be added, maybe Motherwell, and one of the three between Preston and Carlisle, most likely Lancaster. Then again that would destroy the headline time, so it's a no-no, despite how effectively useless it is.
