Hi I'm traveling down from Liverpool taking my son to the Olympics in London next month. Just wondering if anyone knows which stock operate the Chiltern services from Birmingham Moor Street / Snow Hill to London? He really loves slam door trains but there aren't any in our area. So hoping it would be the old Intercity 125's. It would be Tuesday 7th August we go, aiming to arrive into London about 5pm / 6pm.

Hello,
Chiltern don't operate any IC125s, but they operate some services using Mark 3 coaches (the same as an IC125) with Class 67s. Most of these sets have slam doors, but are slowly being converted to power-doors. The following services are operated by Mark 3 coaches:

Monday-Friday
0619 Birmingham Moor St-Marylebone
0655 Birmingham Moor St-Marylebone
0655 Banbury-Marylebone
1055 Birmingham Moor St-Marylebone
1555 Birmingham Moor St-Marylebone

0837 Marylebone-Birmingham Moor St
1337 Marylebone-Birmingham Moor St
1646 Marylebone-Birmingham Moor St
1807 Marylebone-Kidderminster
1813 Marylebone-Banbury

No Saturday / Sunday diagrams

All other services are operated by class 165/168/172 DMUs.

There is only one 172 service a week between London & Birmingham at the moment, it is the first one on a Saturday and is coupled to a 168. This is because of concerns raised by guards over the units so it will likely remain this way until a modification is made.

As for the OP, the best train to catch would almost certainly be the 15:55 BMO-MYB, which arrives in London at 17:45. That is booked as a slam door loco hauled service at the moment. There is a brand new power door version in service too but that should be in London at that time of day as it is booked to work the 16:46 MYB-BMO. I have a picture of the locomotive as my avatar, from the other end of the train it looks like this:

It's looks close enough to a HST for most kids I think.

The majority of services are currently worked by class 168s. 165s do come north of Banbury, but are generally only used on the BMO-LMS stopping service, the MYB-SAV service and the LMS-SAV shuttles unless there has been a unit swap of some kind. By this time next year most BMO-MYB services could well be loco hauled rakes. I still think the BSW-MYB semi fasts will be 168s though, but I might be wrong.

*edit*

I'd check again nearer the time though, you might find that the diagrams for rolling stock have been changed somewhat due to the Olympics.

Thanks for the replies guys. We've changed our plans and are now staying an extra night so will be going down on the Monday after work instead now. There's some cheap direct tickets from Lime Street with Virgin available that night so we might as well get one of those. Although I am still tempted myself I love slammers!

My mum and dad however are taking him (my son) away to Paris on 27th July and my dad was looking for the cheapest possible tickets so now they're going on the 10:55am Moor Street - Marylebone. So he'll get to go on one afterall.

Hope that time train isn't one with converted doors?

It's mainly clubman class 168s, but some 165s and 67s are used
