I will be doing this trip in a couple of weeks on the 8.52 from Liverpool - I was just wondering which type of DMU is normally diagrammed and what food is available for the 5 hour run

Thanks in advance

2 x 158. A trolley will join at Stockport just under an hour into the journey.

The trolley will be on board until Nottingham. Having done the journey in the other direction you will need to get food before travelling, also have something to amuse yourself with, it does get a bit boring. Unless its got a very good battery, a laptop won't do as there are no power points.

Only a doubl unit as far as Notts. The Norwich unit should be the rear unit out of Crime Street.

Unless it's a Saturday. Still a single unit thoughout on Saturday.

As has been pointed out it's 2 Class 158s until Nottingham.

I had the pleasure of riding one of the EMT units for the first time a few weeks ago, only from Manchester Oxford Road to Piccadilly. It was really nice inside, the seats were very comfy too. Then again I find 158s tend to be quite comfy inside, the EMT one was nice and bright inside.

They certainly are, I don't get to use EMT very often but when I do, usually between Manchester and Sheffield, it's always a pleasure to ride on their 158s. As you say the interiors are very comfortable, modern looking and bright.

Care so tell us what 'Crime Street' means or was it a typo?

The EMT 158s have been refurbished to a very high standard. Despite the high density layout, they have good legroom and the seats themselves are quite comfortable. I do sometimes find the need to stretch my legs on longer journeys - as the seats start to feel less comfortable after awhile, might just be my funny back though!

And it's deemed necessary to call it 'Crime Street' because...

Don't rise to it. I also raised an eyebrow but quickly got over it. If I spent all my life trying to combat all those sorts of comments, I'd never get anything get done.

^^ But not rising to it essentially condones it. If it wasn't always Liverpool just getting uniquely singled out for this sort of crap, it wouldn't be so annoying.

As for the topic at hand, I've been on the EMT trains that do this journey. I like them personally, but have only done it Liverpool-Manchester. Think I'd need some decent entertainment such as an ipad or hand-held games console if I was to be on one for five hours.

Oh please. There's no need to be so touchy.

There are LOADS more up and down the network. We have Clown Point Depot in Norwich, the Helmand East (Hertford East) branch and Tottenham Hole station.

Well for me personally it's because of a certain Mr Walsh and his bicycle (which he called "Bertie") who enacted a series of crimes against the railways and staff around the station. So from my point of view it has nothing to do with any stereotypes about Liverpool and its wider population but a harmless reminder of one man and his adventures with his bike, although he does have a wider criminology which isn't quite so harmless.

There are a few on the Southeastern main line. Tartbridge, Ashtray International, C*nterbury West, Doza Marine, Chavham, and Severedoaks.

+1

I had the misfortune to commute irregularly between Sheffield and Norfolk every couple of months from about 2001 to 2008, and apart from a year or two enjoying the Turbostars when they were delivered new to Central Trains, CT and EMT made do for far too long with an awful rag bag selection of knackered 158s. The refurbishment has given a lease of life to the fleet; it's just a shame there aren't a few more units available.

As for the journey, bring your own snacks, but it's a pleasant journey. It's a one of a kind route that crosses all the major north/south mainlines on its way across the country.

It is a very well used route almost throughout. It has now been several years since any publicity for the route has been done at the eastern end. It would no doubt add to the capacity issues on certain services. Only publicity was the shortlived MegaTrain fares available until last year on a few trains each way. If the centre cars had remained it would be possible to really market the route & benefits of an hourly direct service. Tonights arrivals into Norwich have been extremelly busy as would be expected on any Friday let alone before a bank holiday. I would imagine most where standing room only from Peterborough.

Thanks for all the help & suggestions - from what everyone is saying the journey will be:-

Long but interesting

Comfortable

My Netbook won't last too long into the journey so I'll have to talk to my wife

I'll have to buy food in advance

All the asides about Liverpool made me laugh as I come from the just outside the area - but it would be hard to find a funnier/friendlier City

Thanks again
