Was not sure wether to put this in the quiz area or infrastructure.

but seeing as its just fact finding I'll post here, how many signal boxes do not control the lines directly in front of them there can't be to many as I can only think of 2-3

Wimbledon ASC (W) does not control the lines in front of it, these are done by Victoria (VC) .

Rugby PSB (RY?) the lines in front are controlled by Rugby SCC

The other one 1 thought of was wembley but not 100% sure.

Anymore out there.

Saltley doesn't now (im not including WMSCC as that is different...). I don't think Aston does.

Trowse near Norwich. They control the swing bridge operation but their actual railway signalling area starts/finishes at Whitlingham Junction.

Correct. The lines in front of Aston SC are controlled by Birmingham New Street PSB. It could be argued that the same applies to Bescot Down Tower as the Up and down goods line is behind it and all the sidings in front of the Tower are the responsibility of the yard person in charge!

Manchester North SCC situated at Salford Crescent controls from Midway between Salford Crescent and Central stations as far north as Moston and Ashton Moss (and formerly to Oldham) has lines outside it controlled by Piccadilly PSB

Rochdale West signal box, is at Castleton with the lines outside it controlled by Castleton East junction. The Rochdale west signalman can see his trains three miles before they appear on his panel lol

Manchester East SSC situated at Edgely Stockport controls various routes such as the line at Ashburys to Guide Bridge, Soon to include the Stalybridge area, Glossop line (if it doesn't already). Theres a few other bits they control but I cant remember where. Said box sits next to lines controlled by Stockport No1, No2 and Edgeley.

Swindon B Box I think falls under Swindon A; it controlled from the Wootton Bassett area only westwards. That however may have changed with the Thames Valley ISCC opening at Didcot.

TVSC also doesn't control the lines in front of it (yet), they are controlled by Swindon B, as mentioned above, which also doesn't control the lines in front of it! TVSC recently took over Slough IECC, which also didn't control the lines in front, and they still don't now Paddington is controlled from Didcot! Confused?

Wimbledon does control the main lines outside, but the lines right next to it are indeed Victoria.

Victoria, is of-course, not at Victoria, but near Clapham junction!

These days a signalling centre (signal box is an old fashioned term really) can be anyway. As long as you have a data link to the phones and interlocking, you could be in an office building miles away in a remote part of town for all intents and purposes.

A good example would be York IECC which also these days controls the entirety of Leeds station and the whole of the Aire Valley as far as Gargrave and South to Cottingley, so yeah, bloody miles away! The Signals at Leeds are still plated with the Old Leeds PSB signal codes

Depends on how close you want the lines to be.....
Yes, the WCML does go past the box (and can easily been seen from there) but the first lines you come to are actually some non-signalled sidings in the yard then the next few lines are controlled by Wembley Yard, which is a separate box to Wembley Main Line.

By that token, Wembley Suburban is in a similar position with the Carriage Lines between it and the DC lines it controls - it is in the same box as Wembley Main Line but in many ways is a separate entity.

Thanks for confirming what I thought, also thanks for the other replies.

Neither Swindon PSB or Swindon B IECC controlled only westwards from Wooton Bassett. Swindon B took over the Didcot area that used to be controlled by Reading PSB. Swindon PSB itself controls from the fringe with Swindon B near Uffington to the fringe with Bristol PSB near Thingley Junction on the GWML and Hullavington on the South Wales and Bristol Direct Line.

Im not sure how Salisbury's currently operating - What with the majority of the WoE now being controlled from Basingstoke Panel (Near enough Woking to Axminster / Honiton), with i presume Salisbury still controlling Romsey to Salisbury?

Salisbury still controls the area prior to the WoE panel installation. Nothing has changed so it fringes with Westbury at Heytesbury (to all intents and purposes), the WoE panel at Tisbury (where it fringed with Gillingham pre recontrol), Eastleigh at Dunbridge, Basingstoke just prior to Grateley station (say Porton).

No change.

When Cowlairs SC is abolished, its control area will be migrating to Edinburgh SC, so WSSC will continue to be located remote from its own area of control.
