Just noticed this rather interesting website displaying images of the prototype class 150 (150001) out and about around the country, and also, some original adverts by British Rail regarding the new 'Sprinter' fleet:

http://www.traintesting.com/Class150.htm

I find one part in the advert (bottom left) particularly amusing:

'Sprinter's transmission means fast, quiet getaways that you'll hardly notice'

However, it's got me thinking...what will units that we see as flash and modern now be percieved as in 20 years time? Will the class 185s still be 'transforming travel' or will a trip on one want to make you cringe? :p

Anybody got any thoughts?

185's in 20 years will be the current Pacers, although the Pacers will no doubt still be going - in small numbers, and we'll be all hunting the last few journies...

One of the adverts proclaims "Sprinter space". How are 150s spacy, inside, the seat layout (original, still on CT/Silverlink) is abysmal... Where's this space??!

Thats a top site though, all very interesting. 150001 at Wick...mileage move!

Love this Caption

"Later that day 150 001 is pictured in the yard at Wirksworth whilst staff have a look round the area."

Staff swamping the place!

Did the 151's end up getting scrapped? I seem to remember seeing them at Crewe a few years ago, looking in bit of a state.

Ahhhh 150001 aka "The Scud",used to be a regular around the midlands in the early 90's. I believe the unit carried its original livery till about 1995/6. I once asked why it hadnt been painted up & got the answer that due to the fact it always broke down it hadnt reached the mileage for its major overhaul service where they repaint them.

When I was a signalman I had 001 fail & cause chaos on my panel at least 20 times, infact it was never refered to as 150 001. Standard conversation to signalman from driver was "Yep I've got the Scud & its failed again"!

Still is a regular, it's still at Tyseley but you won't see it much as it spends most of it's time on the Great Western lines through Snow Hill! Just been repainted into the new CT livery. 002 appeared on the Walsall shuttles last week though!

And yes, a preservation attempt was made on the 151s a couple of years ago but I believe they were recently scrapped as beyond salvage?

The 151s were bought by a company called Endeavour Rail who intended returning them to traffic. This never happened, and they put them up for sale but there were no takers - so the two units were broken up on site at Crewe a couple of years ago.

Shame, they look quite unique!

More info about the two 151s.

They where a sort of Hybrid with a Pacer-style body sheel on a 150-derived chassis, with differant bogies.

There was alos a single class 145 prototype, converted from 150002, which had the same transmission/control system as a class 151 and was also used as a tesbed for the AirCon system now fitted to 158s.

Class 151 was certainly nowt like a Pacer! More like a 156 with a suburban body on it - wasn't any form of converted bus!
