On 13.23 Plymouth 125 (MO) to Edinburgh yesterday. Due to 'animals on the line at Ambergate' we were diverted at Derby via Trent Junction etc, rejoining at Clay Cross. I take it that Sheet Stores junction to Trent East junction sees regular passenger or is it a 'rare curve'?
Had it not been for a clown at Leeds station we would have arrived at York only 5 down! Interesting, despite doing Falmouth to York: just over 8 hours (ch Truro and Plymouth)...Truro to Plymouth a tolerable but near full 150 and the 125 Air con working flat out to no avail.
Cannot find the 125 diags for the new TT on the 125 group site for future trips. Having said that the Voyager Southbound on Friday (06.32 York-Plymouth) was pretty good, well I was in First.

There's a cross country working to Newcastle routed this way on a saturday morning (I forget which one)
I'm told it's to keep the xc crews knowledge up on this diversion, it's been used recently on Sundays while clay cross tunnel has been undergoing maintenance.
In true railway fashion, there's no SB booked working this way for xc!!

The route is known as the Erewash Valley

I'm doing the run on the Erewash valley via Toton to Derby this week, the trains are being diverted round this route for this week until the 10th June due to works in Clay Cross tunnel

I had the same diversion on 4 May,but with a bizarre twist.

Left New Street at 1330, on nearing Derby announcement tat the train was terminating because of a person hit by a train.

Derby station chaotic, looking wandering about I found an EM Train with the staff shouting 'Sheffield'. We took this diversion and I stood in vestibule to Sheffield.

On arriving Sheffield I looked for the next train to the NE. XC train to Newcastle shown leaving in 5 minutes.

On getting on I sat in the same seat in the same carriage with the same people as I had seen when I got off in Derby.

They had sat tight and also been diverted.

Is it better to ignore such announcements till asked to leave in person?

I think the problem here is the need to ensure that the driver signs for the diversion route.
If this closure had just happened they would need to check this with the driver, and there was probably an EM train ready to leave, it makes sense to move the passengers in case the XC driver is not able to do the route.
Clearly in this case they were, and the XC train probably followed the EM one to Sheffield.

I had a similar thing a while back, I was wanting to catch a train from Nottingham to Langley Mill. We got two signals out of Nottingham and stopped.
Someone had been hit by a train near Ilkeston, and our Northern driver did not sign the route via Derby. We then reversed back into Nottingham, and our 158 was coupled to an EM one, and the coupled set left with a EM driver driving the Northern set!
