Hi All,

I have been made aware of a medium term hire of 172102 from Chiltern to London Overground, to cover maintenance / exam work being undertaken on LOROL's 172 fleet. Diagrams reportedly changing daily, the toilet is out of use, all CH network maps have been taped over (for some reason) and LOROL maps have been put up. Pictures on Causton's flickr - The PIS has apparently been set up for GOBLIN use.

It's also to temporarily replace the LOROL 172 which is up at Derby at the moment for a floor replacement / alterations, and should only be coming out on one select peak hour diagram - Although it can and will come out in place of any LOROL 172s if needed.

It'll be interesting to see how this unit works / copes on the LOROL as it's higher geared than LOROLs units.

Any idea what this peak diagram is? :)

What concerns me is the question "why is the toilet out of use?" I know how train toilets work and the possible dirt problem that may be caused (if waste is emptied on the track which I believe happens in some cases) but it would at least be a nice treat for commuters and others...

I think its that additional service which terminates at Upper Holloway due to the bay platform at Gospel Oak already being used.

Reportedly 172 104 has been seen around the Willesden area, not sure of the circumstances around this.

I think it continues to Hampstead Heath (2J96 07:59 Woodgrange Park to Hampstead Heath).

That one service is all it does all day?

Yes, because it is normally the on-call spare unit.

They do something similar on the ELL in the morning peak, using units that then become hot spares for the rest of the day.

Not a bad idea as lorol has recently expressed a view to operate 3- 4- car units in the near future to ease overcrowding issues

The 172 go to Willesen depot so seeing one in the area is very normal.

I know LOROL's fleet is serviced at Willesden, however I thought Chiltern done their own maintenance? 172 104 is a Chiltern one

They were locked out of use on the 150s that preceded 172s on the GOBLIN. Basically in the past toilets along the line weren't used as toilets, but were instead used as a place to take drugs by locals. I believe they left the 150 toilets as absolute wrecks in some cases, ergo Silverlink (who operated it at the time) locked them permanently out of use. Toilets are available at Barking and Gospel Oak, so I doubt it's impossible for people to hold out, and it is certainly for the set's good that the toilets is locked. I dread to think what it would look like after a Friday evening run...

I don't think the LO 172s have toilets? So LO probably don't want the hassle of sorting out the non-standard tasks associated with emptying/filling stuff periodically. This is fair enough really.

I think Turbostar toilets being a "nice treat" for commuters is a bit optimistic, although of course they might provide extra standing room.

Aye, the LOROL ones do not, I think the Chiltern sets do, locked out of use in the GOBLIN's case. It does make sense about saving time having to the maintenance of them, however, as I said, I doubt they would be used as toilets anyway.

The druggies would have to be slightly anoraky/really dedicated to specifically bash the Chiltern unit... :p I see your point though.

Here's an excessively long quote from the local user group's most recent news bulletin, which I've extracted as its difficult to find.
OVERGROUND TO HIRE IN DIESEL TRAIN FROM CHILTERN RAILWAYS
In the last e-bulletin, the full utilisation of the LOROL Class 172 DMU fleet was discussed regarding the operator’s inability to provide more PIXC-buster trains. BGOLUG had concluded that LOROL would have to sub lease a 2-car diesel train from another train operating company if there were to be any quick relief of peak period overcrowding, citing LOROL’s sister company, Chiltern Railways as the most likely candidate. LOROL’s response was that Chiltern’s fleet was fully committed and their long term hiring of a unit to LOROL was out of the question.

Now comes news that LOROL is “borrowing” a train from Chiltern, so that a one of LOROL’s Class 172s can return to Bombardier at Derby for rectification to faults in the saloon floors. Questioned if the floor faults were caused by the strain of regularly carrying peak period crush passenger loads, LOROL insisted that there was no damage to the carriage floors, merely that the floor coverings were not performing as advertised!

Incidentally, Chiltern’s Class 172s have more seats than LOROL’s and have a toilet (which is bound to be kept locked out of use while the train is being operated by LOROL), which means there is less standing room. I think LOROL will try and keep the Chiltern set in reserve as much as possible. It may well become the regular unit for the 07:59 Woodgrange Park – Hampstead Heath PIXC-buster.

After several false starts, LOROL think that they have cracked the problem of the deafening public address systems on the Class 172 trains. A software fix that seems successful has been uploaded to 172 003, so perhaps members will look out for this particular unit (car numbers XXX13) and let us know if your ear drums notice the difference!

Spot the slightly frustrated user group stuck in the middle of a whole load of public sector nonsense taking the opportunity to vent.

Seen in service this afternoon forming the 15:32 from Barking - presume it will form the 16:20 back out of Gospel Oak.

Because LOROL have no way of emptying the waste retention tanks/ filling the clean water tank.
So the waste tank would fill up, the toilet take itself out of use and the waste would "ferment" until such time as it can be emptied. Can you imagine the "odour" that would be given off after a week or 2.
The fact that the maps have been changed suggests that it is going to be on hire for some time!

Maps have not been changed - if you look at my photos linked in the first post Chiltern ones (above the door) are covered with paper, with the Overground ones stuck on the back of the DMI :)

Yeah but the point still stands I'd imagine, what would the point be if it was going on Tuesday?

TfL have high standards of customer information provision? :) The stickers aren't massively expensive (I bought a full-size Victoria line map for £1) and if they have some spare why not use them? :)

Okay maybe I should have put "the maps have been covered over with white paper (as opposed to any other colour paper) and new maps have been fitted in a slightly different position".

Either way the maps the passenger gets to see have been changed!

It would help us to build a more accurate picture if you would specify what type of paper had been used to cover the signs up while you're here.

In some ways it's surprising that they haven't temporarily replaced all the seat covers in whatever moquette thingy they're using at the moment. Maybe the TfL brand has a finite pot of money to be spent on it after all.
