I just played with trainscanbecheaper.info, and found that
from OXENHOLME LAKE D to MAGHULL via Warrington is permitted, but from OXENHOLME LAKE D to TOWN GREEN is not, while map WG should allow both, right? Thanks!

MAGHULL is associated with these routeing points: Liverpool Group, PRESTON LANCS, Wigan Group.

For the journey Oxenholme Lake District - Maghull, Liverpool Group is an appropriate routeing point for Maghull. Wigan Group and Preston are also appropriate routeing points for Maghull.

For the journey Oxenholme Lake District - Town Green, Liverpool Group is unfortunately not an appropriate routeing point for Town Green (due to failing the fares check rule). Wigan Group and Preston are the appropriate routeing points for Maghull.

Lancaster Group is the only appropriate routeing point for Oxenholme Lake District for both journeys.

Map WG is only quoted for journeys between Lancaster Group and Liverpool Group, hence this does not apply to the journey to Town Green.

None of the other map permissions allow travel via Warrington without doubling back.

There is no applicable easement AFAIK.

Thanks! BTW, what is the fares check rule?

Are you familiar with using the Routeing Guide?

I never read routing guide before, just found this by playing with the trainscanbecheaper.info, and just tried to dig out why it is not permitted...
The routing guide seems very interesting, I will take a look :)

Thanks!

I think it would be helpful if you have at least a quick look at it for a rough idea of how permitted routes are determined.

If you then have questions then we can look at them more specifically.

(I'm not trying to get out of helping, just that it would otherwise take a lot of explaining.)

TCBC is useful but only as a supplementary tool, as a number of things haven't been implemented by it, of which fares check is one, which is used to determine which associated routeing points are appropriate for the origin/destination.

In fact TCBC is supposed to do a fares check before suggesting appropriate routeing points, but there were two interesting issues in this case.

First, one of the members of the Liverpool group didn't have a correct three letter code in the database, and because of internal workings was always passing the fares rule even if it shouldn't. This is now fixed.

Second, for the journey Oxenholme to Town Green, Wigan is an interesting Routeing Point to use. It FAILS the fares check for Anytime Day Singles but PASSES the fares check for Off-Peak Day Singles. TCBC was seeing the initial failure and rejecting it.

The Routeing Guide instructions are not clear what to do in these circumstances, so I'm now using the interpretation most favourable to the customer, which is to pass the check if ANY of the fares pass.
