Today I saw an Arriva Trains Wales loco at Preston, probably a 57?
What is it doing there and what's next to it, some kind of blue loco..?

Virgin Trains Thunderbird one of 57313-57316. With only a few months left on the franchise will retain their ATW livery.

Possibly 57316 as I saw it twice light engine on the weekend of 26/27 May , once at Man Picc and again at Crewe.
What it's doing I don't know because I'd guess it has been freed up by Arriva's use of 3 * 67s on the Holyhead Cardiff.

As Virgin have sole a further 3 57s to DRS, they have taken the ATW ones back so they have enough to be positioned up and down their network as thunderbird locomotives.

The ATW 57s were on extended hire from VT since Dec timetable, awaiting the 67s which started March I think after driver training , ATW consider the 67 far more reliable & efficient,

The 57s could not be used on the DVT which commences September in any case, ATW drivers had a dislike for the 57, which was left running all night at Holyhead due to start up problems.

Hang on - isn't there already a VT Thunderbird at Preston, so why would there need to be three locos (one freight, one VT, and one ATW) unless the ATW 57s are hauling freight? Are they?

They have not been sold, rather returned to Porterbrook who have since leased them to DRS.

I keep seeing 57's drag pendolino's past wigan. Every weekday at about 11pm-12am. It goes from Preston then past Wigan then on to Longsight TMD via Bolton.

Iv'e seen it pulled by a plain blue 57 (DRS?) but not the ATW livery.

The empty stock off the 2030 from Euston is dragged by a 57 to Manchester Longsight. Serves the purpose of maintaining route and traction knowledge for drivers and also to rotate the 57s back to their depot. The loco used is the one that has been parked at Preston during the day. When the Arriva service started 57313 & 57316 were painted blue with no logos, 57314 & 57315 in full Arriva livery.
