(The other week coming back from Stafford First with Virgin we saw no staff whatsoever, either serving or checking tickets and the missus had to wander down to the buffet car to get her tea - that ain't what the official blurb tells you)

Was that a weekend or bank holiday and was it a Super Voyager?

Going back to Hull Trains, the weekday offering is decent. The carriage can often get busy and can have a surprisingly large number of families with young children, so it's not always that quiet. The food is edible and filling, but don't expect a three course meal. I find the seats to be comfortable with plenty of legroom. Overall, you get what you pay for, and since it costs little more than Standard Class on most services, I would pay the extra as it is a pleasant experience.

It was a Saturday and a Pendolino

Cheers, will give it a go then, though it will be a weekend.

On a Super Voyager you always have to collect your "goodies" from The Shop, but on a Pendolino there should be a trolley service. However this always seems to be the first thing to go when there are staff shortages.

The lack of ticket inspections is unusual, though. How will customers pay for the Weekend Upgrade!? (Which, for the record, isn't available on Hull Trains).

I've not experienced it at weekends, though there does seem to be a more substantial food offering than Virgin.

.

It isn't the first time recently. Have made a number of journies from various North-West locations in both First and Standard and not had tickets checked on journies to Euston. Maybe they want to test me and see if I try and travel without a ticket (not that I would do such a thing).
It has been noticeable that they have been the smaller stops (i.e. Stafford, Macclesfield, Runcorn, Warrington).

Hot food is served at weekends although the choice is a little more limited than the week. I did a First return on Hull Trains over Christmas and I was really impressed. The staff were friendly and the quality of the food good. Would really recommend it, especially at some of the lower tiered advance prices, very good value.

Thanks for the info - saves me bringing my own kettle, crockery, cutlery etc
