last week i passed through a gateline at a fgw station. the station has two exits and the exit i used is not the main exit and its at the other end of the station, away from the ticket office. on this occasion only a g4s person was manning the gateline. is that allowed? there were no fgw staff present. what would he do if the ticket was a tricky one and the barrier said seek assistance?

ess. If you search through the Fares & Ticketing sub forum (rather than this NR General Discussion sub-forum), you will find many discussions involving G4A staff on gatelines (and at the same time, you'll find many opinions about them, too!). The majority of those seem to relate to Manchester Piccadilly Station.

Yes, they are working as authorised Railway personnel and are empowered to inspect tickets. Some, though I believe not all, are also empowered to take Witness Statements in the course of Revenue Protection duties.
I would expect that they would look at the ticket and make an informed decision, in much the same way as any other gateline staff across the country.

I guess they'd also have a radio, so could ask a more knowledgeable person over the radio to either provide an answer over the air or make their way over to assist.

Interesting situation I came across on the FGW patch - Exeter Central. Two exits; the main one was manned but the other at the far end of the platforms was not but the barriers were closed. Is this even allowed??

There is a communications device with CCTV cameras enabling customers with non-functioning tickets to contact assistance and release the gates.

This situation is permitted under the relevant standards and guidance (available on the RSSB website) provided the person monitoring it has enough time and resources to do so. Of course you can make up your own mind whether this is acceptable approach both for revenue control and customer service.

BR used to shut other entrances/exits altogether when they did revenue blocks at one particular entrance/exit. However, now-a-days accessible entrances and exits are more of an issue.

I imagine the barriers would be automatically opened in the case of a fire?

Still happens, at Falkirk high two of the 4 exits are blocked in the peaks for revenue checks. Sadly blatant dodgers just jump over the top of them, be nice if BTP collected them later.
