Does the single bi-directional line that runs from just outside Coatbridge Sunnyside then down behind Coatbridge Central and joins the mainline at Whifflet South junc ever get used?

I remember many years ago (mid 90's) during flooding in GLagow Central Low Level trains went to and from Lanark via this line in to Queen Street Low Level, but other than this I've never seen or heard of anything else running on it?

Anyone know differently? And if so, what times do the trains run on it, would love to see one on it again.

I know more or less nothing about this area, but I've made an attempt to look it up anyway.

I think what you're describing is called the Whifflet Loop? By the looks of it, it might be used to shunt Whifflet line trains between services, although that's the opposite end to Coatbridge.

I can also spot 2 ECS movements (1 each way) that I think might be supposed to run the whole curve, but I don't know how often these run. You can see them here, although some inside knowledge on them would be more useful. There isn't any information on freight available.

The line doesnt get used often anymore not alot of scotrail drivers have that route on their cards anymore,the last time i was on that line was 4 years ago there were engineering works on the argyle line so everything was being diverted through queen street into bellgrove then along to whifflet south jnct. EWS drivers had to route conduct scotrail drivers along this stretch.

Test trains definitely use it. It's a good place to be put out of the way in times of disruption too, I've been held on it a couple of times. Hop over the wall onto the road adjacent, voila - burger van.

The test trains and the RHHT always use it,only the odd time during disruption does scotrail put trains in there to turn them ie late running etc,

The Deanside trips stopped running a couple of years ago, I'm afraid.

There is now only one regular freight working over the line a week;
6R59 Mossend to Dalry, which is booked to pass Sunnyside Junction
at 12:37 on Thursdays
.

Good luck! :)

Thanks. That's bad news about Deanside run. I thought it still ran twice a week. (although not neccessarily over Whifflet/Sunnyside line) Oh well.

Thanks for the gen on 6R59. That's perfect, I'm off next Thursday, will go and catch it.
;)
