I think it may possibly be one of the ones working for FGW however I may be corrected by someone. I too saw this unit on yesterday's meet.

Anyway Mick, it is good to see that you have found this forum. Not seen eachother for a while now :(

These are ex FGW (Wessex) ex First TPE 158s. They have been returned to the leasing company as they can't be bothered to pay lease charges and 143s are cheaper to lease for what was Wssex....

Not true,

FGW are under pressure from the DfT to cut as many costs as possible, hence the TOC have been forced to hand these and the three '153s' currently stored at Eastleigh back to their ROSCO's.

I would summise the problems GNER are experiancing with their franchise has triggered major alarm bells within the DfT and so they are trying to ensure FGW don't go down the same path. However, in reality they are causing more harm than good.

Due to the mass complaints and capacity shortages highlighted by the local media recently, i am sure it will not be long before they return.

So first got rid of the TPE 158s over the 143s.

Bastards.
NO.
FGW tried to keep the 158s but the DfT overruled them.

And why was Jonathan's post approved when it's clearly completely unfactual and just another pop at FGW?

Was there anything to stop First group themselves funding the leasing for these units? I don't see any reason why they couldn't or am I being too simplistic?

An interesting theory. FGW have done something similar in the past when they bought HST Powercars from MML after Project Rio had finished. Perhaps they're still trying to secure the return of the units in storage and make the DfT cough up. If that fails then there isn't really anything stopping First Group paying for them. There making around £70m a year (Including Bus Operations) so funding them isn't impossible.

I think there was a couple of true facts in that post, yes First Group did purchase some powercars and trailers, No they wern't purchased from MML.

The whole idea is to make Angel trains think twice about the stupid leasing prices they're charging for stock.

Surprised no-one has asked this yet, what's the ID of the 158(s) currently in Reading Turbo Depot?

Absolutely nothing stopping First, apart from the fact that the leaseco's might not want to part with them.

The situation was different with the HSTs, bet the leaseco's wish they hadn't sold them now!

Looks like 158798 has left Reading. It was seen passing Kingsland Road depot in Bristol just before 4pm this afternoon. I couldn't see if it was in service or empty.

Hasn't the ScotRail unit gone back up north? And is 158863 a 'real' West unit, or one of the CT units that just got put into Wessex livery ala 860.
There are no Scotrail units in service with FGW unless you count 158745/746 that came down from Scotland many years ago. 158741 has indeed long gone. 158863 is not ex-Central. 158863 is currently non-standard with Scotrail as it is one of the final batch of 10 units supplied to RRSW with higher rated engines. They are unlikely to keep it unless of course they acquire the other nine that FGW are rumoured to be wanting rid off shortly. Expect more bad publicity for them when that happens.

Anyway this thread was about the 158 at Reading depot which of course is no longer there......
