Hi guys, I have two queries regarding groupsave tickets, which I require clarification on.

Firstly, do groupsave tickets always have to be the same "age group", by which I mean can you have two adults and 1 child on a groupsave, or do they all have to be either 3 adults or three children?

Secondly, a bit of a silly one this perhaps, can you buy groupsave tickets from a TVM, particularly an FGW TVM?

TIA :)

Buying GroupSave is fine if one or more of the group is a child.

It effectively means the child/children is/are travelling on an adult ticket. That is perfectly allowable.

AFAIK GroupSave is not available from TVMs. It should be purchased from a manned station or onboard/at interchange/destination where no ticketing facilities are available from the departure station.

Adhering strictly to the Conditions of Carriage when travelling form a station that has a TVM means you should purchase tickets that cover you for at least part of your journey then excess at the first opportunity (without delaying your journey). But how you do that to cover the whole group and how you then get those tickets excessed up to GroupSave is a bit of a grey area.

Leaving aside the 'rules', in the real world you are very unlikely in FGW land to encounter problems buying onboard or at interchange/destination should you be starting your journey from a station that only has a TVM.

Groupsave allows three or four adults and children to travel off-peak for the price of 2 adults, So you can mix and match.

I don't believe Groupsave is available from TVM's.

As has been pointed out above, a child is perfectly eligible to take up the place of an adult on Groupsave tickets. Note that however if the tickets are eligible for F&F Railcard discount, then that would be cheaper if the railcard is already held.

Apart from what John @ Home has mentioned, Leicester's S&B machines also issue tickets with Groupsave discounts, although they are of the wrong kind and there is a large notice stuck to each machine advising the fact that the Groupsave discount offered by those machines are not valid on either EMT or XC.
