47580 paint job -well done

Apologies if this as been done before or its in wrong section, but just seen 47580 doesnt it look good - must be the best loco paint job ive seen

Yep, it looks quite nice but the union jack in the middle spoils it. The colour reminds me of some of the deltic's that used to run along the ECML.

Well, 580 will be staying like this in late 1970s stratford 47 livery for some time, as this was done as a partnership between West Coast & The Stratford 47 Group with 2pack paint.

It's the "Silver Jubilee" livery that Stratford applied to a couple of Great Eastern 47s

that's the whole point of it. it's a recreation of the 1977 Stratford Jubilee livery.

pity, though, that they couldn't have been a bit more imaginative with 47854 when they named it, rather than just using the standard muddy maroon.

I think you'll find that the emblem, flag or jack actually pre-dates the use of such an image on the flag of a jack staff on boats, so it can be refereed to as union jack without any links to boats, as this does pre-date the use on a jack staff.

Also, how could one refer to this as a flag, it is not flying, merely painted onto some steel...

A common misconception. And one I believed as well until I watched a recording of an episode of 'QI' this past week. Reference was made in the recording to the union flag/union jack by showing a picture and asking the panelists for the correct name. Both are correct for common usage and this was codified in a parliamentary debate in 1908. This was actually a retraction of an answer given in an earlier QI episode from 2009 when Stephen Fry said that the flag is only called the union jack when flown from a ship.

The national vexillological (vexillology = the study of flags) organisation of the United Kingdom, The Flag Institute says:

It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given Parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".

Oh, and lower case initial letters for 'union jack' are also fine.

I was always of the impression that when the union jack is flown from the bow jackstay on a ship it has a white border and is known as the pilot jack. But anyway the loco looks brilliant in that classic livery and i agree kudos to those involved they did a great job.

I agree, very well done. It looked great in large logo and looks great in the jubilee BR blue livery.

To be honest, the paint job is not bright enough and doesn't contrast with the union jack. Not the best job I've ever seen for sure

Maybe that is just your impression from the photo in the first post? It looks great in 'real life'. If not then I beg to differ with you! :P

Nice paint job on the loco (although perhaps not so great that I'd be driven to start a thread about it... ), but the union jack/flag/whatever on the side is a dreadful mistake.

Again, you'll have to take it up with Stratford depot in 1977, as that's what it's a recreation of.

And has been done to the best of their ability. It has been said that this was a difficult repaint to do as they didn't / couldnt move the position of the nameplate. So its led to a slight jumble around of the locos livery, but i do like it and think West Coast / SF47G have made a very good job of it, afterall it's been done for the Jubliee and is a reprensentation of the two previous Jubilee 47s.
