It was with much disgust that I purchased my copy of the above at Haymarket Station this morning only to find there was no report on the France v Ukraine match never mind the England v Sweden one.

In this day of computerised typesetting what the heck is going on <D

Would be interested to know if anyone purchased a copy in England today and whether that contained the missing reports. The fixtures were completed by 10pm for heavens sake.

According to The Independent it is printed by Trinity Mirror in Watford,Oldham,Belfast and GLASGOW so presumeably the copy is sent up the line and can be altered at short notice.

Other RailUK Forums members in Scotland did your papers contain the reports ?

I know they can do it because The Independent had a report on Chelsea's Champions League win which finished at a similar time.

Maybe due to the fact that The Independents sales in Scotland are somewhat on par with that "circulation giant" The Morning Star

The independent is always one of the first papers to be printed wherever this is happening, and doesn't have any kind of sports supplement.

It may well be the case that the rag was actually printed by 8pm last night and ready to be sent out, unlike the other, more tabloidey papers that are simply completed that morning and sent out unstuffed, there are a lot more things to be done to a copy of the independent before it is sent to dealers.

For example the D Mail Saturday is printed (and delivered) in three parts that are combined by some poor sod in the back of WHSmith Terminal 2 with 70s and 80s club music on between 2am and 4am before he deals with the usual morning idiots. (And needs a fag break before the place opens and managers turn up at 5am, or 4am if it's the only decent manager we had, nice gap between 4:15 when places are open and 4:45 to fit in a fag and a brew before managers turn up :))

The torygraph is worse at 4 parts, some delivered one or two nights beforehand.

So anyway, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

What is the sports section like, with match reports of the matches referred to, in the Morning Star ?

Last time I happened across a copy of the Morning Star was earlier this year whilst awaiting a Train by whiling away the hours in Newcastle Library.

It must be decades since I last saw it, indeed I believed it was defunct.

Like a newspaper from the 1800's it was more akin to a "pamphlet"

However if my memory serves me correctly it did have some sporting news:p

Got my usual copy this morning in Cheshire complete with extensive coverage of the England - Sweden game in the sports section. Are you saying there was no sports section at all or it just lacked the footy report?

Yes there was a Sports Section (the normal pullout) but it just contained a report that the France v Ukraine match had been delayed nothing about the England game other than the kick off was likely to be delayed.

This is ridiculous if they just send the copy "up the wire" to be printed in Glasgow as at the other locations why were we in Scotland denied the coverage.

Have E-Mailed The Independent to find out the reason for this apparent discrepancy.

This reminds me of thirty odd years ago when visiting my Granny in Banff and "The English Newspapers" didn't used to arrive until after lunchtime.

I saw a copy of it at Sainsbugs Market in Pimlico some time last year. So perhaps it's now targeting itself at the champagne socialists :p

Sod all...

We only had the Daily Record and the Sunday Mail.

Glasgow has a MUCH larger distribution area than the likes of Oldham and London by driving time, if you delay it too much it would leave the highlands without any copies of the cheap rag.

PS: I really don't work for WHSmith any more, thankfully!

Apparently it is only printed in Glasgow on Monday to Friday - at weekends it comes up from Oldham hence the deadline is earlier for inclusion of any material.

At least they replied pretty promptly :p
